WORK: The volunteers
will be working at the Rehabilitation Centre, which serves physically handicapped
people - both children, youth and adults. The illnesses they suffer from
vary from mild handicap to severe paralysis. The Rehabilitation Center
is a very active and busy unit, which organises sports tournaments, arts
and crafts classes, lotteries, pottery workshops, fencing tournaments,
music concerts, international conferences, seminars and trainings for volunteers.
The participants willing to take part in the project will be expected to
look after the patients and to help in the rehabilitation activities at
the swimming pool. By the same token, the volunteers may be asked to assist
the staff of the centre in everyday duties - helping the patients to dress,
eat, wash and take part in recreational activities. Furthermore, the volunteers
should be ready to offer their help and support in any other fields contributing
to the successful management of the rehabilitation Center - administrative,
cleaning, painting, gardening, communication. One of the special requirements
is that each volunteer should bring with him/her something typical for
its native country - a video, an album, postcards, calendar, a costume,
folk music, a dish, badges, stickers, flags, etc. This will be crucial,
as the volunteers will be asked to present and familiarise the patients
with other cultures.

WORK: The workcamp
is organised by the Social Care Center for seriously mentally retarded
children. The Center is located in Warsaw-Miedzylesie. It was established
in 1970 and, at the moment, it serves 150 patients. The volunteers will
be expected to devoted their time to painting the fence and the gate surrounding

WORK:
This summer workcamp is organised by the Children's' Friends Association,
which for the last 80 years, has been actively involved in providing therapeutic
- pedagogic help and material assistance to poor, neglected, abandoned
and underprivileged children and their families. The workcamp is designed
for a group of children (ages 8 - 15; around 50 children all together).
The central aim of the project is to enable the children to improve their
knowledge of English language, to initiate cross-cultural communication,
to socialise and to enjoy their leisure - time activities by the sea. The
language training will be conducted on different levels depending on the
participant's age and language proficiency. Every volunteer will be assigned
to a different group and will be responsible for conducting and assisting
the Polish staff in running regular English classes according to the schedule
prepared beforehand both by the volunteers and the Polish staff. The volunteers
should develop an interactive approach and enable the participants to use
English language in practise through games, excursions, sports, role-plays
or parties. The volunteers should bear in mind that, for some children,
it will be their "first encounter" with the English language and similarly,
the first opportunity to speak to a foreigner. Thus, the volunteers should
prove to be patient, open and tolerant towards the children. Finally, the
volunteers may be asked to prepare a short presentation concerning their
own country - its culture, customs and traditions. Consequently,
the volunteers may wish to bring along some tapes with traditional music,
typical food or any other thing the children may find interesting.
LOCATION: The
workcamp will be held in a summer resort - Dabki, which is a small town
near Darlowo, situated on the Baltic Sea Shore. The region is known for

from Dabki to a number of noteworthy sites. In the course of their leisure
time, the volunteers may visit Darlowo - an impressive medieval town with
its famous gothic castle and church, medieval chapels, fortifications,
see monuments and visit a Marine Museum.

environment, which constitutes its greatest treasure. Following the commune's
putting into effect a number of pro-ecological programmes, Lobez land succeeded
in winning the 1st prize in "the best environment-friendly commune of 1997"
contest. Since then the authorities have been expanding the technical infrastructure
for the purposes of environment protection. The volunteers will also find
a forest educational trail, the so called " ecological path", which has
constituted one of the main tourist attractions ever since it was opened
in 2000. The volunteers may admire the municipal park, the green forests
and picturesque meadows, which stretch along the neighbouring Rega River.
The region is also famous for its cycling trails, beautiful forest complexes,
ponds, glacial lakes, and river valleys which all contribute to Lobez unique
scenery. In short, this tranquil and peaceful spot is ideal for a
workcamp and some rest.
ACCOMMODATION:
Rooms will be provided on the spot close to the breeding centre. The volunteers
are advised to bring their own sleeping bags. The local canteen will provide
all meals.
TERMINAL: There
is a railway station in Lobez, however, there is no direct train from Warsaw.
The main railway stations in the region can be found in Szczecin or Stargard
Szczecinski.
FIYE 13 GLAZ Glaz 05.08-25.08 kids 6
WORK: The summer
workcamp is designed for children aged 7 - 15 from primary schools. The
group will consist of approximately 65 children. The chief objective of
the workcamp is to create a unique opportunity to combine summer holidays
and recreational activities with the language training. The children will
be divided into groups depending on their linguistic skills and each volunteer
will be assigned to a different group to become its tutor. The volunteers
will be mainly responsible for conducting and running informal English
and German classes, which would be both informative and enjoyable. The
children should acquire new linguistic abilities through organised, well-planned
and entertaining games, role-plays, and sport activities, excursions and
other fun educative activities. The volunteers should bring their own teaching
materials (not too theoretical, rather fun, interactive and entertaining).
Furthermore, the volunteers may be asked to help in any other kind of activities
that need assistance or the volunteers' own initiative and imagination.
The volunteers willing to take part in the camp should bear in mind that
the participating children come from small villages and thus require attention,
patience and commitment. What follows is that volunteers should make
all attempts to initiate cross-cultural dialogue and overcome cultural
barriers.
LOCATION: Glaz
is located in the south-west of Poland close to Wieruszow and west if Lodz.
The volunteers may visit the town of Wieruszow (which was firstly mentioned
by Ptolemeus Claudius in the 2nd century A.C). There, the young people
may visit a historical church and a monastery from the 17th century, a
baroque church with two impressive towers and nine wooden chapels, the
remainings of a historical castle as well as admire huge oaks surrounding
the historical sites.
ACCOMMODATION:
All volunteers and the participating children will be put up in the same
building on the site. 2,4,6 - persons rooms will be available. The organisers
will provide all meals.
TERMINAL: Wieruszow.
From Wieruszow a local bus will take you to Galewice where the camp is
located.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The volunteers are expected to be well behaved and to obey the regulations
of the summer workcamp (observe fixed hours of meals and sleeping hours;
report to the superiors when leaving the camp). Drinking alcohol and smoking
cigarettes are strictly forbidden. Above all, however, the volunteers should
possess good personal manners, communicative skills. Initiative, imagination,
dedication and motivation to work with children will be widely appreciated.
Previous experience with children will be an advantage. Also, the
volunteers should prepare beforehand and bring some teaching materials
and information concerning their countries of origin. They are welcome
to bring all sorts of booklets, albums, photos, tapes, food, cards, flags,
pins.

LOCATION: Mielnica
is a small village in central Poland close to Konin. It is situated near
the Goplo Lake - one of the prettiest, largest and cleanest lakes in the
region. With its picturesque small islands and green forests, the spot
is home to numerous rare bird species. The region is known for its mythical
historical sites such as the Mouse Tower later transformed into XV century
castle set up by Kazimerz Wielki. Roman arches and the remainings of other
buildings from that period also attract many tourists. The volunteers may
also wish to visit Konin or Biskupin.
ACCOMMODATION:
The volunteers who decide to take part in this project will stay in a building,
which used to be a former school. The place is fully equipped and prepared
for handicapped people. There is no need to bring sleeping bags. Additionally,
all meals will be served and prepared by the local canteen.
TERMINAL: The
easiest way from Warsaw or Poznan is to take a train and get off in KONIN.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The volunteers are expected to possess considerable experience in working
with handicapped people and should be prepared to work, live, assist and
look after them. Thus, apart from good communication skills and sense of
humour, the volunteers should also prove to be tolerant, responsible and
patient. Can-do attitude, optimism and team spirit will be widely appreciated.
Please note that each volunteer is expected to bring something typical
for its country of origin in order to present it to the patients in an
attractive manner

WORK: The workcamp
will take place in a Neuro-psychiatric Hospital for Youth and Children
in Zagorze near Warsaw ( 1,5h ride on the bus), which provides medical
services in the field of neurology, neurological rehabilitation, children
and youth psychiatry and therapy. The hospital possesses several facilities,
both for inpatient and outpatient treatment. The volunteers will be working
in nearby forests surrounding the Hospital as well as in the sanatorium
for children (ages 5-17) with physical disabilities. Most of the working
hours will be spent on construction works in the sanatorium's area. This,
will include: building a playground and a stable for horses as well as
further construction works in the forest. Should any young children remain
at the Hospital in the summer period, the volunteers will also then be
expected to take care and to look after them, to engage in and organise
activities for them (games, walks in the forests).
LOCATION: Zagorze
is located 20 kilometers from Warsaw. Beautifully located in the forest,
it covers the area of some 80 hectares. It has been famous for its role
in strenghtening physical health since 1903 and has been the oasis of peace
and quiet for artistic circles from Warsaw for many years.

WORK: The workcamp
is organised by the Social Care Center for seriously mentally retarded
children. The Center is located in Warsaw-Miedzylesie. It was established
in 1970 and, at the moment, it serves 150 patients. The volunteers will
be expected to devote their time to painting the fence and the gate surrounding
the Center and to get actively involved in working in the section for seriously
retarded patients (ages 10-35) - who are both physically and mentally handicapped.
Their work will aim at increasing the patients' interactive skills (through
walks, drawing classes or simply talking to patients). The volunteers will
help in organising various games, sports activities and excursions as well
as to voluntarily provide help to the Center's staff. The chief objective
of their work will be to help the patients in their everyday life by creating
different living conditions and breaking the wall of social isolation which
surrounds them. The social exclusion has a negative impact on the patients'
both physical and mental condition. Therefore, the significance of good
and friendly atmosphere cannot be underestimated. Thanks to volunteers
and the intercultural character of the workcamp, the patients will thus
be offered a unique possibility to change their monotonous life pattern.
One should also bear in mind that most of the patients are very passive
and, with few exceptions, are difficult to approach. Nevertheless, they
are in desperate need for love and attention they deserve.
LOCATION:
Miedzylesie is located 10 kilometres away from Warsaw. It takes about 50
minutes on the bus to get to the Warsaw city center. Alternatively, you
can also take a train and get to Warsaw even quicker.
ACCOMMODATION:
The volunteers will be put up in a small school for residents, which is
located in the area of the Social Care Center. The food will be provided
by the institution and served in the local canteen.
TERMINAL:
The nearest railway station and airport are located in Warsaw.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Volunteers should posses some experience in getting in touch with the above-described
patients; they must be tolerant, patient, out-going and ready to confront
all kinds of minor problems that are likely to arise in the course
of their service. They must be highly motivated and prepared to commit
themselves wholeheartedly to this work.
