EST 9.3  PALDISKI         12.06- 26.06.02      ARTS/RENO          8 int.+10 locals

Project
In the beginning of XX century Paldiski was a small spa town, hosting vacationers enjoying the sea and nature. In the 1940’s the Soviet military transformed the town into a secret military base closing it off to the rest of Estonia. When troops pulled out in 1994, a skeleton of the town remained. Since that time a new community has formed, bringing a new vitality, which has attracted many newcomers. International camp, organized in cooperation with Design Studio, shows the will of Paldiski residents to create change, inspire hope and open its doors to the world outside. Paldiski was built as a typical Soviet military town with uninspiring gray blocks. Today many of these building are abandoned and partly destroyed. Based on the concept of Vision Ecology the camp aimed at improving the living environment by painting artistically the murals in the town to create new lively and colorful milieu, which will diminish negative energetic in the town, help to fight depression among inhabitants and increase their optimism. Talented volunteers are needed to help this task. NB: this is not a graffiti project!

Work
Unlike traditional camp the work will be organized differently. It is a creative process, which begins from discussion on concept, designing pictures, making drafts and then painting murals in Paldiski. The work will be accompanied by study part/ lectures on art and artistic techniques. Besides volunteers will help renovation in the Design Studio premises. Local 15-19 years old youngsters will join the camp.
