Svilaj is a
small village on the countryside, 15 km's from Slavonski Brod, Croatia.
The vols will
be helping a local farmer take practical care (feed, clean) of his horses
in order to
get familiar with them. The vols will also use the horses for riding with
disabled children
and war victims living nearby.
W: Feeding,
cleaning after and caring for 10-15 horses. Riding horses together with
disabled children.
S: Workshops
on human rights, conflict resolution etc. A protected natural area lies
5-6 km's away.
The beach at the river Sava is 500 m's away. A bird reservation lies
close to the
camp and there wil be lectures by a specialist in ornithology. Trips to
Slavonski Brod
are possible.
A: In a football
club 200 m's from the horse stables. Bring sleeping mattresses and
bags. There
are several showers, and very simple toilet facilities. A professional
cook
will cook for
the vols.

Kutina

Kutina is a
small city (app. 10000 inhabitants) 70 km's south of Zagreb. VCZ will
organize this
camp in co-operation with Kutina Youth Center (KYC). KYC made Kutina's
first and very
successful Summer Festival last year featuring films, concerts, sports
events, workshops
etc, and they now want to incorporate an international workcamp in it.
W: Participating
in the small cultural festival Kutina Summer Festival 2002. The vols
will be doing
workshops for primary and secondary school children on the topics:
dancing, computer,
hand-crafts, music, acting... The vols will also help in organizing
some of the
events during the festival. There will be 3-4 days of helping setting up
an
already built
playground for sand-volley as well.
S: No study
subject prepared yet, but the vols can teach each other in their workshop
subjects if
they like.
A: In a local
dormitory in beds. Sleeping bags are necessary. Several toilets and
showers and
a kitchen available.

Q: Since the
volunteers' primary task is to make workshops with the kids, they need
to
have skills
in e.g. dancing, computer, hand-crafts, music, acting...and be willing

Lovinac

Lovinac is
a small town the Gospic area, app. 200 km's south of Zagreb, beautifully
situated in
the Velebit mountain range. The area was affected during the wars in the
nineties. The
camp is a cooperation between VCZ and an agronomist in the local city
government.

W: The vols
will help locals in reconstructung the roof of a warehouse. Other work
possibilities
include cleaning the area around a watermill (the local area's cultural
heritage),
gardening and helping on a herbal farm.
S: Ecology.

available,
and a kitchen will be equipped for the camp.

Ozalj is a
small town with 2500 people by the river Kupa, situated 50 km's from Zagreb.
The town has
an old castle and an old hydroelectric powerplant. The local people are
not environmentally
aware and throw garbage in the nature. The work tasks are to clean
up garbage,
educate locals in ecology and make workshops.
W: Cleaning
up garbage around the castle, around the river and in a non-legal garbage
disposal site
in the forest. Ecology education and talks with the locals.
S: Making workshops
and exhibitions on ecology.
A: In a castle
on mattresses. Sleeping bags necessary. 4 toilets available. Showers in
a nearby school

Krapina is
a large archaeological/palaeontologic site, famous for its discovery of
the
Neanderthal
"Homo Krapiniensis" in 1899. The town is situated 50 km's north of Zagreb,
Croatia. The
workcamp will take place in cooperation with the palaeontological/geological
museum of Krapina.

the archaeological park near the museum (clean and conserve sculptures),

Veliki Tabor

It is now used as a museum and for cultural events. The vols will help
in renovating
the castle. The camp is done in cooperation with the cultural NGO Gokul,
which presents
film, music, drama and art crafts in the area, also using the castles in
the area.
W: Renovation
of the castle Veliki Tabor. The participants will choose among the listed
tasks when
they arrive. Major tasks: Cleaning rooms and inventory in the castle, cleaning
and repairing
the attic, carpentry work, cleaning the area around the castle. Minor
tasks: Creating
orientation signs under paitings and the coats of arms (for artistically
skilled), photocopying
prospects of the castle, indexing books in the library, indexing
the wine in
the wine cellar, bottling wine liquor, creating database of firms who want
to
cooperate with
the castle, writing translations for sightseeing in the area.
S: History
and the cultural heritage of the Zagorje region and the castle, thermal
baths,
old castles,
wine roads and houses. Art workshops. Drawing, singing, installation etc.

Using the site
of abandoned military barracks Green Action intends to develop an educational
centre where activists and general public will be able to learn about renewable
energy technologies and environment protection in general. Barracks are
situated on the hill in the south part of the island, 2 kilometers from
the nearest village, placed in a beautiful Mediterranenan landscape. Solta
is a small island (54 km2, less than 1000 inhabitants) half an hour by
ferry from Split.
Work: Renovate
the buildings and surroundings of the abandoned military barracks. More
specifically expected major tasks will be: repairing the doors and windows,
cleaning of the buildings, painting, clearing the surroundings.
Study: There
will be an educational programme about renewable sources of energy and
presentation of Green Action's experiences in energy campaigning.
Accommodation:
There is no furniture or beds in these buildings so sleeping bags and mattresses
are necessary. Also there is possibility for camping in the nature. Toilets
and showers available. The buildings have been abandoned for 7 years and
the infrastructure is in a very bad shape. There is no electricity on the
site. The vols will be divided in cooking teams and will prepare meals.
Language: English
Qualifications:
Interest in environment is preferable but not necessary. Participants should
expect sometimes a hard physical work and working in hot summer conditions.
Experience in carpentery work is most welcome.

The village
of Knezevo (2000 inhabitants) is in the Baranja County, 20 km's north of
Osijek, Croatia.
Knezevo is in a war-affected area, and the local community is of a
multiethnic
composition (Croats, Hungarians, Serbs, Romans etc.) The population has
a
50/50 composition
of returnees/people who stayed during the wars. The local NGO, Nansen
Dialogue Centre,
facilitates peace-building initiatives and conflict resolution (see
www.ndcosijek.hr
for details). The vols will renovate a 120 year old kindergarten in
Knezevo, which
has been deserted for 6 years, but now is in the process of being
restored.
Work: Rebuilding
children's playground in kindergarten and school's backyard, renewing
and painting
swings, seesaws, merry-go-round, slide, jungle-gyms etc.; painting
kindergarten
windows, rooms and furniture.
Study: The
Baranja County 10 years after the conflict - challenges and possibilities:
Study possibilities
include human rights, minorities, unemployment, a divided community,
but also beautiful
nature, potential resources, and a desirable future - development
through industry,
village tourism, healthy food production, and the re-building of a
multiethnic,
civil society. The vols will visit local NGO's, Roman and other minority
communities,
the cities Vukovar and Osijek, the national park Kopacki rit - and explore
the surroundings,
incl. vineyards and wine cellars.
Accommodation:
In the kindergarten, on mattresses. Sleeping bags necessary. 1 shower,
1 adult and
3 tiny children'stoilets available in the kindergarten. Several showers
available in
