Volunteers will work with local volunteers
and staff of the ‘Tortuguera” (sea turtle reserve) in Monterrico, a small
isolated beach town in Guatemala. The work project will depend on the number
of volunteers but will probably involve construction (painting signs or
building bathrooms at the visitor center). Volunteers may also work with
the turtles, caymans, and iguanas in the reserve. Monterrico is a hot,
tropical place with a black sand beach. People are poor and accommodations
are basic. During the day there are lagoons and other beaches to explore,
and the organizers will plan a weekend outing to Antigua or Lake Atitlan.
The project is being organized for the first time by three agencies: Centro
de Estudios Conservacionistas, Don Quijote travel agency and World PULSE,
a workcamp organization based in California (USA). Accommodations: very
basic 4-room shelter with mattresses on the floor (3-4 in a room), camping
stove, toilet and shower. Almost like camping. Terminal: Antigua, Guatemala
(arrangements can be made to be picked up from Guatemala City). Volunteers
will be driven to Monterrico from Antigua on Sun 11 Aug. Requirements:
Volunteers must have their own health/accident insurance. Must enjoy the
outdoors and be able to adapt to simple living conditions. Bring a sleeping
bag (or bring a sheet sewn in half and plan to buy a blanket in Antigua
before the project). Spanish helpful but not required. We recommend taking
inexpensive Spanish classes before the project in Antigua or Monterrico.
