Thailand
Type of camp: working in a temple
Numbers :

1.Background
Buddhism is the main religion in
Thailand and there are many different aspects to it. There are reclusive
monasteries in the deep forests; there are monasteries that are located
in the Big City Bangkok. There are monks who strive for liberation in seclusion;
there are those who want to lend a helping hand to their direct environment.
The monastery where this camp in the first week will be held is in the
suburbs of Bangkok and the abbot is one of the great social and religious
reformers in Thailand. He set up many different activities within his temple
grounds so as to cater for the needs of the poor, workless or ill. Some
activities aim on giving those without work a new profession, some help
children in need, others work on an herbal garden. Half of the camp is
spent in the temple joining temple activities such as compost making and
organizing youth activities. In the temple volunteers should adjust to
the temple life, which means no alcohol, no smoking, and no music…
Therefore the second week the camp will be held outside of the monastery
a rural village where the volunteers join in with their work and organize
activities for the village youth.
2.Work
You will see the different activities
and try to communicate with the students and residents at the temple ground
(no regular school but special classes). Within the temple the main activity
will consist of garden work, including compost making 3.Accommodation
The accommodation is very simple.
Volunteers should even bring their own sleeping mat and musquito net.
4.Location
The camp will be held in a suburb
from Bangkok.
5.Qualification
No special qualifications are necessary.
CHANG RAI SOCI
Place: Hills, Chiang Rai Province,
Northern Thailand
Type of camp: hilltribes, Akha culture

02-421 02-461 02-501 03-021 03-061
03-101 03-14 03-18
1.Background
Although more than 90% of the Thai
nationals belong to the same ethnic group there are a few minority groups,
mainly different hill tribes that stay or move along or beyond the Thai
borders with Burma and Laos. One of the most colorful (in terms of culture)
is the Akha, which can be found in the hills in Northern Thailand. Some
of them have Thai citizenship, some not; they are merely tolerated and
often accused of opium growing and/or forest depletion. The last is very
unlikely since their moving around does not mean that they disappear but
shows more their dependence of the forest. Their relative isolation in
the hills may not only be the savior of their particular culture but now
also a danger to their culture as their education level is low and their
sources of information (think of an understanding of AIDS for example)
are limited. The NGO AFECT is trying to preserve the Akha culture by helping
with practical matters (for example dealing with the government) while
at the same time giving young Akha students access to education. In total
about 50 Akha students live and study at the two centers in the city of
Chang Rai, where they work on their future and are educated about their
culture in order to preserve this by bringing their knowledge back to their
villages and containing information for the future as the Akha language
did not have script to do this.
After several successful camps AFFECT
now hosts volunteers every month. This year they will organize these work
camps almost fully independent as they do not need the help of Greenway
for others then the contacts anymore! Therefore only information sheets
and camp acceptances will be organized by us and for the rest the camp
will be fully under their responsibility. As the organizations we work
with in all our different camps are the ones with the knowledge and the
best possibilities to make a deep impact, we stimulate the organizations
that we trust are capable of this in working this independently. AFFECT
is the first organization where Greenway has started a new activity and
that is ready to take this over!
2.Work
The work will consist of working
with AFECT, studying the Akha culture while working together with the villagers
on their land, teaching in their schools. The work will be in the villages
in the beautiful mountains, isolated from the rest of the world.
3.Accomodation
The accommodation is simple, dormitory
style at the center and home stay with Akha families in the villages.
4.Location
The camp will be held in Chieng Rai
(meeting point) and the surrounding mountains all the way to the boarders,
arguably one of the most beautiful locations in Thailand! There are hills
and forests and then the influence of the hill tribes and nearby Burma
and China.
5.Qualification
Interest in social and cultural work.

Type of camp: a tour-camp developing
Ecotourism
Numbers:
02-323 02-363
1.Background
Ecotourism is an alternative to mass
tourism for people who are interested in escaping the congestion and westernization
of the large cities. It promotes cultural exchange between tourists and
the local population with the least possible negative impact on environment
and daily life of the villages.
Homestays allow the community to
control the number of tourists and are an attempt to prevent uncontrolled
development of natural areas.
Moreover the Ecotourism project stimulates
economic activity in local villages. Visitors are encouraged to spend their
money in local, family-operated shops and markets, keeping money spent
there within the community.
The modest sum given to the host
families provides supplemental income in an area largely dependent on the
rubber industry, whose prices have dropped in recent years.
Due to the Greenstay program many
villagers are learning for the first time about the need for environmentally
friendly habits and the importance of conservation of natural resources.
2.Work
The work will focus on making the
villagers aware and helping them setting up a new eco tourism destiny.
Excursions and attractions should be tested, home stays should be tried,
information should be recorded for future eco tourists. This information
may consist out of general information about the village, the surroundings,
basic Thai language needed, tips for travelers, etceteras. This information
will be passed through to and by the Eco Tourism team of Greenway which
is responsible for setting up a Eco Tourism database in Thailand (Greenstay).
/ Besides collecting information for future eco tourist the aim of the
camp is to introduce the villagers with eco tourism and help then understand
the possibilities as well as the necessities to organize this in a cultural
and environmental friendly way. Many times the villagers do not realize
that the eco tourist are interested in learning about their (rural) lifestyle.
The volunteers will show interest in the aspects of their daily life, showing
where future Eco Tourist would appreciate some more information, what are
good ways for the villagers to do that (without the language because they
will not have a camp leader there to help them!). What are nice activities
to do together? What are the (sometimes)-strange habits of foreigners that
might be staying in their house? The volunteers should “show” the cultural
differences and help the villagers understand them somewhat better in an
informal, friendly way. As well as teaching them some basic English needed
to host foreigners, and in general, get the villagers to understand about
the concept of Eco Tourism. All of this should be initiated by the volunteer
group: do not expect the villagers to come with a plan which you should
“test”.
3.Accomodation
The accommodation will be at different
spots. In a center dormitory style and in homestay families with 2 people
in each house.
4.Location
The camp wild be held at different
spots in Kanchanaburi province. Depending on where the last group has left
of and where the Greenstay Ecotourism project is in their process of research.
The camp will consist out of 3 periods:
? homestay with a future hostfamily
? tracking: exploring the surroundings
for attractive sites/ activities
? education: teaching basic English
and other skills needed to host future ecotourist in the village and to
get people accustomed with foreigners.
5.Qualification
Volunteers are expected to have some
ideas formed about eco tourism and should have lots of initiative to implement
this from the pure beginning. Besides this the volunteers should be interested
in getting to know the life in the village as well as Thai culture and
reflecting on the cultural differences in an open minded way.

03-13 03-17
1.Background
Organized from GREENWAY in
Khon Kaen, this camp will take place in one of the surrounding rural
villages. The volunteers will bring ideas and practical help, especially
by direct teaching to the village youth in primary schools where the children
have to pay no or very little school fee.
2.Work
Teaching in English in a self-chosen
fashion to the local village children at a primary school set up by a Foundation
for less privileged as well as at centre premises during after school activities.
Developing lesson plans and ideas in the group and passing this information
through for future volunteers is part of the plan to create follow up and
long-term improvements. It is also expected that the volunteers bring in
creative ideas for the village, for example in environmental, organizational,
or programming issues.
3.Accomodation
The accommodation is simple, dormitory
style in the centre and homestays with families in the village. Volunteers
should bring their own sleepingmat and musquitonet as not all families
can provide this.
4.Location
Khon Kaen is a medium large city;
fourth largest in Thailand, and a center for the upper Isarn and trading
town. It is not a city with an exciting nightlife but more of a calm town
in the middle of nowhere. The camp will be in one of the surrounding rural
villages. Beautifull nature can be found at 50-60 km away in different
directions, and these are large National parks.
5.Qualification

03-102
1.Background
Between North-east and Central Thailand
there is a mountain range that divides the it is still nearly all covered
with prime forests; elephants, tigers and many near to extinct animals
roam free. You could see some of these animals during your stay! The people
living in the villages surrounding the National Park are poor and make
their living out of going into the forest illegally to cut the plants and
kill the animals to sell on the market. The National Park has a Khao Yai
Concervation Project (KYCP) that works in 3 teams;
1. a forester patrol team that protects
wildlife from poachers
2. a scientific team that counts
animal population to measure the park’s biological health
3. a community outreach team that
works with local children and villagers.
Greenway organizes work camps here
on a more or less continuous bases to create follow up and give practical
and financial support to this project which is a role model for many national
parks in and outside Thailand.
2.Work
One week you will be working together
with the foresters in the center of the park. You will be helping them
with manual work, for example making a path, collecting garbage along the
nature tracks, go on patrol, etc as well as giving them pride in their
work by showing interest. During this week you can learn a lot about the
park and its wildlife, see the waterfalls and the wildlife while helping
the foresters with their work. The second week you will work with two foresters
who are stationed in the village for three years with the aim to protect
the forest by bringing the villagers new occupation (farms) and by education
about the park and the environment in general. This second week will consist
out of joining the villagers in their project, working together with them
in their vegetable farm and mushroom farm. Social development work in the
village and/or school is stimulated: mainly informal education about basic
environmental issues such as garbage, compost, etc.
3.Accomodation
The accommodation is very basic,
dormitory style / home stay and open air. Volunteers should bring their
own mattress /hammock and musquito net.
4.Location
The camp will be held more than 40km
south from Nakorn Ratchasima, the gateway to North-east Thailand. The camp
is only about 200km from Bangkok (meeting point) but in no way is one reminded
of that fact. It is deep forest. Once outside the forest there is a large
road to the Big City. The area is beautiful as it is a National Park.
5.Qualification
Deep respect for environment and
the will to work on improvement of this in a socially active way. Participants
cannot be afraid to get their hands dirty and do physically demanding work
such as cutting wood, walking long trails, etceteras. Ideas about the problems
of the park should be formed. Participation in discussions about this is
expected. Further more any ideas on educational activities about the environment
to organize in the village are more then welcome!

1.Background
Deforestation is a big problem in
Thailand, as it is in other areas in the world. Although rich and poor
people are engaged in tree cutting and land occupation there are communities
who want to go another way. One such community is near Kao Phu Kao Ya (Grandfather
and Grandmother Mountain).
In order to make their efforts for
saving their direct surroundings easier, it would be better if there could
be introduced low impact eco tourism. But the villagers don’t have any
idea how to attract tourists neither what is necessary in terms of accommodation
or infrastructure. Last year’s camp was a success in the sense that the
villagers have seen the necessity for cleaning up their immediate surroundings.
2.Work
The work will focus on making the
villagers aware and helping them setting up a new eco tourism destiny.
Excursions and attractions should be tested, home stays should be tried,

3.Accomodation
The accommodation will be at different
spots. In a center and in homestay families 4.Location
The closest larger city is Patthalung,
nearly 900 km south from Bangkok and the easiest connection is by train.
Volunteers who would like to fly from Bangkok to South Thailand can fly
to HADYAI. If communicated in advance Greenway office will assist in further
travel to the campsite.
5.Qualification
Volunteers are expected to have some
ideas formed about eco tourism. Besides this the volunteers should be interested
in getting to know the life in the village as well as in the forest.
PHAYAO SOCI
Place: Phayao, Phayao Province, Northern
Thailand
Type of camp:
Numbers :
02-322 02-362
1.Background
AIDS is a very serious problem in
the world, in Thailand and then again especially in the Northern provinces
of Thailand. There are many theories about why there is more AIDS to be
found in the northern provinces. These theories look at poor education;
prostitution because no prospects for finding ‘normal’ jobs, a social (ethical)
structure that cannot adequately prevent the spreading, etc. Among the
hill tribes the problems are even more serious as they have less access
to the mainstream education and information. It is good to have a first
hand look at the problems and give a helping hand where possible.
2.Work
The work will focus on spending time
with the people who have aids. For the NGO in case it is very good to get
some international exposure and see international interest in the fight
against AIDS .
3.Accomodation
The accommodation will be at different
spots. In the village it will be home-stay or temple stay or otherwise
simple accommodation., it is advised to bring your own sleeping mat for
they may not always be available.
4.Location
You are supposed to find your way
up to Phayao, not far from Chieng Rai (northernmost province of Thailand),
which has a big bus terminal and a airport.
5.Qualification
Social interest and the right spirit
to stay in beautiful located, poor village communities.

Number and starting data:
All even weeks 2002: 02-02, 02-04
etc.
All even weeks 2003: 03-02, 03-04
etc.
1.Background
GREENWAY has a new Homebase! Ranote
is about 150 kilometers from the Greenway base camp. A little village at
the seaside where we would like to start an international center where
the local people can walk in and out as they like and have the possibility
to have international contact. In this center we would like to have volunteers
every two weeks to set up a “clubhouse” where the local people can come
to learn and develop themselves through alternative teaching on all subjects
and free time activities. Workshops should be organized, creative ideas
should be stimulated, and education about environmental and social issues
should be organized.
2.Work
- Teaching English to local village
youth
- Organizing free time activities
for the local youth IN ENGLISH (especially educational activities such
as handicraft, sport, music, etcetera). Subjects depend on the interest
and capacity of the different volunteers)
- Construction work on the
building that is empty and badly kept but should be a comfortable place
for living (sleeping /cooking), teaching, workshops
- Maintenance work on the surrounding:
the gardens, the beach
- Passing through all information
and ideas on paper for the next volunteers
3.Accomodation
The accommodation is a beautiful
but badly kept bungalow complex ON the Beach, at the edge of a small village.
The volunteers will sleep dormitory style; basic necessities are available.
4.Location
Ranote, Songkhla Province in the
South of Thailand in a small village.
5.Qualification
Idealism and hart for children should
be the drive, initiative and creativity the means, making a long-term difference
by setting up this place the goal!
This camp is for people who are interested
in and capable of working actively in a group without one specific leader.
An opinion about the effect of such a center in a small remote community
should be formed before coming. For this camp we need people that want
to work when they get up, not afraid to get dirty, people with creative
ideas, people that can communicate with the other participants, with the
local people (considering the language barriers) and with the future volunteers.
People who see the future aim and want to contribute to this even if they
are only there for a short time. The possibilities a center like this brings
are unlimited (think of the knowledge a international group can bring on
issues such as environmental care, self sufficient living, artistic possibilities,
economical ideas for alternative occupation of the villagers).
We especially welcome people with
experience in educational work, youth work, development work and construction
work, as well as artist who are capable of using their skills as a source
of communication. Task should be divided within the group according to
the qualities and interests of the participants.
In this camp you we prefer people
not drinking and smoking.

SATUN TOUR
Place: Satun Province, South of Thailand
Type of workcamp: ecotourism set
up
Number
02-09

03-11 03-15 03-19
1.Background
This is the ‘base camp’ of GREENWAY
and it is a center set up so as to accommodate different kind of work camps
on a more or less continuous basis and function as an international center
where the local people can walk in and out as the like and have the possibility
to have international contact. The area is chosen since it is rural Thailand
and it is in the middle of farmer communities. The expectation is that
the volunteers will bring ideas and practical help, especially by direct
teaching to the village youth in primary schools where the children have
to pay no or very little school fee.
2.Work
Teaching in English in a self-chosen
fashion to the local village children at a primary school set up by a Foundation
for less privileged as well as at Greenway premises during after school
activities. Developing lesson plans and ideas in the group and passing
this information through for future volunteers is part of the plan to create
follow up and long-term improvements. It is also expected that the volunteers
bring in creative ideas for the center, for example in environmental, organizational,
or programming issues.
3.Accomodation
The accommodation is beautiful but
simple, dormitory style.
The food will be vegetarian. We prefer
people not smoking and drinking here.
4.Location
The camp will be held at a site close
to the Had Yai Airport (no noise from airplanes) and besides flying in
there is are regular train- and bus services (several times a day) between
Bangkok and Had Yai.
The surroundings are between rubber
plantations and Had Yai city is at 25 km. Further away there are wonderful
forests with waterfalls and the sea with white beach that will be visited.
5.Qualification
1. You should love children, as you
will be surrounded by loads of them most of the day…
2. The ability to teach independently
in a less formal way and ideas about children activities should be formed
before coming.

SURIN ENVI
Place: Rattanaburi, Surin Province,
North-East Thailand
Type of camp: forest education and
environmental care via Eco Tourism set up
Numbers:
02-292 02-371
1.Background
Deforestation is a big problem in
Thailand, as it is in other areas in the world. Although rich and poor
people are engaged in tree cutting and land occupation there are communities
who want to go another way.
Excursions and attractions should be tested, home stays should be tried,
information should be recorded for future eco tourists. This information

3.Accomodation
The accommodation will be at different
spots. In a center dormitory style and in homestay families with 2 people
in each house.
4.Location
The northeast of Thailand is the
poorest part of the country. Most of the people are farmers and they don’t
have much money to spend on “luxury” products like TV, radio, car or motorbike.
Therefore there was a lot of (illegal) logging and hunting in the area
until people realized that this couldn’t go on forever. Logging is minimal
and during the last few years guns have been collected to stop hunting.
People started to plan to attract tourists but nobody has any experience. This
will be a follow up camp in four villages close to the river Mun in Roi
Et province
5.Qualification
Volunteers are expected to have some
ideas formed about eco tourism. Besides this the volunteers should be interested
in getting to know the life in the village as well as in the forest.
