REGION.- Region of Pa?s Vasco. Province of Alava.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK.- To carry out archaeological work on the Roman city of
Iru?a/Veleia. For the moment, the work to be carried out will be aimed at
 meeting the following main objectives:
From a scientific view point, the most relevant point will be get to know, in
as much detail as possible, all about a middle to upper class large urban
dwelling, from the height of the Roman Empire until towards its end.
From a didactical point of view, and due to its major architectural value and
possibilities, it will be a case of making a whole home visible and
 understandable.
This will be done using the following methodology:
An archaeological excavation with thorough archaeological documentation
 (current state, extensions, explorations).
 Identification of the dwelling's lay-out.
 Consolidation and "museumisation" work.

PARTICIPANTS PROFILE.- When enroling, participants should show a certificate
proving they have or are studying Humanities, History or Archaeology.

A BRIEF ASSESMENT OF THE IRU?A/VELEIA SITE.- On the Arkiz spur, surrounded by
the Zadorra river and between the modern-day towns of Villodas and Trespuentes
(Iru?a de Oca, Alava), a great fortified settlement or oppidum, belonging to
the group of Caristios, was to be found in the first millennium b.c. It was
one of the largest settlements of our Iron Age and may have covered over 30
hectares. Its privileged location and its human potential meant that at the
beginning of our times it was chosen by the Romans to build a city called
Veleia. In fact, this is the only city as such in existence in the Roman era
in what is now the Basque Country.
The city of Veleia was helped by the fact that it was near the
Astorga-Bordeaux road, the main land route to cross the Basque Country in
Roman times. Products from all the corners of the roman Empire (Bizkaia, the
Rioja, Gaul, Italy, Germania and Africa, etc.) came to the city which became a
centre for delivery and redistribution of goods. Veleia's importance increased
during the initial centuries a.d. and covered an area of around 80 hectares
with hundreds of domus or urban dwellings and also public buildings such as a
theatre, thermal baths, a forum, temples, etc.
Towards the end of the 3rd - beginning of the 4th century a.d., the city had a
large wall, measuring over 1,5 km. built around it which even enclosed a
hamlet of over 11 hectares. This is the late roman wall of Veleia, the largest
architectural construction of the roman era in the Basque Country and one of
the most important in the north of Spain. The city was abandoned as such
towards the end of the 5th century a.d.
Iru?a/Veleia is like a huge historical archive covering over 1500 years of our
early history. It is a well-conserved archaeological archive of which a lot
still remains to be discovered. The site's scientific potential is tremendous
and its potential as tourist site is quite clear as soon as the value of its
remains are realised and it is "museumised".

OTHER ACTIVITIES.- The activity team will prepare a series of activities so
that participants on the project get to know something more about the culture
and the habits of the Basque Country. The team will send the programme
directly to the participants who, if they wish, can make suggestions to change
or widen it. These activities will be carried out every afternoon and the
weekend. All group members will participate.

 ACCOMMODATION/FOOD.- In a local school.

 LANDSCAPE/SURROUNDINGS.- Iru?a is 12 km. from Vitoria-Gasteiz.

TRAVELLING INSTRUCTIONS.- By train on the Madrid-Ir?n line. By bus from
 Vitoria-Gasteiz.

LANGUAGES SPOKEN.- English and Spanish. All volunteers must have good spoken
 english.

the volunteer is unable to make this time, he must get to the camp within the
following 24 hours and he must previously justify his reason for turning up
late to the Basque Government's Youth Department.

AGE MIN:  20   MAX: 26  YEARS OLD

REGION.- Region of Pa?s Vasco. Province of Vizcaya.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK.- This year ?s work camp will optimise institutional
resources with a view to obtaining maximun results.
The main idea, as mentioned previously is to mark out a specific itinerary
around the mining area which would include the buildeing of support structures
and steps to make it easier for people to walk around the area.
The main task will be combined with other additional work so that volunteers
will be able to try different activities. When referring to additional work,
we should remember that a book has been published with all the routes that can
be followed through the Triano and Galdames mountains and visits to all the
mining structures that currently exist. This means it will be necessary to
review previous work and hence the additional work mentioned above will be:
 - To review existing itineraries (replace any broken or mislaid signposts,
etc.) and finalise the new one that was started upon last year.
 - Cleaning of larger-sized objects from the new itinerary to be marked.
 - Maintenance work on the infrastructures recovered in previous years.
 - Prepare a bar chart with information about each of the group?s activities on
the work camp to be exhibited in the Traparagan Cultural Centre in October or
 November.

METHODOLOGY.- During the time the programme is held and from the point of view
of sociocultural intervention, the idea is to use a dynamic and participative
methodology in which young volunteers on the work camp will be the main
players of everything that is done. Although the activities programmed will
have the end to themselves - since they will serve to provide enjoyment to
large sectors of the surrounding population, will also be a way of getting
this same population involved in sociocultural activities in the region of LA
 ARBOLEDA (TRAPAGARAN).

GENERAL AIMS.- To make one of the interesting areas of Bizkaia known, not just
from a historical, but also from a landscape point of view. To highlight how
much this area can be enjoyed. To recover part of Bizkaia's history, by
cleaning and maintaining what remains of the mines as a complement to other
interesting elements in this very special landscape. To establish
interpersonal relationships between the different people who come to the work
camp and the rest of the local community.

OTHER ACTIVITIES.- The activity team will prepare a series of activities so

 ACCOMODATION/FOOD.- "La Arboleda" Local School.

LANDSCAPE/SURROUNDINGS.- In town, 12 km. from Bilbao. The Pe?as Negras
Environmental Centre is in an area known as the Triano Mountains. It is
located in the geographical centre of the Triano Mountains and can be accessed
by taking the road (or funicular) that links Trapagaran to the mining area of
La Arboleda, and from ther, 1,6 Km. down a forest track leading to Muskiz.
