Project: Escuela Especial Para Silentes
(DIF)
The objective of the school is to
give a special and appropriate education to persons of all the ages dealing
with deafness. This scholar system aims at giving them tools for a better
communication within their social and family environment. The school is
related to the System for an Integral Development of the Family (“Sistema
para el Desarrollo Integral de la Familia–DIF ”), a much larger project
supported by official authorities. The volunteers will help and assist
the local teachers in recreation and education activities. Contribution
on therapeutic activities especially aimed at deaf and dumb people are
needed. 15 students follow a full-time program in the school, while 15
others follow the courses once a week. Most of them are between 8 and 20
years old. The work requires a great patience and much enthusiasm. As the
project is living its establishing phase, didactic and recreation material
for deaf people are needed. Thus, donations are welcome! Thus, maybe you
can participate in activities to get economical support for the school,
with a group of local volunteers. The director of the program and of the
school is the psychologist Carlos Pe?a Guti?rrez.
Lodge: The volunteers will be hosted in family’s houses of the children. They will share community life with the family.
Remarks: To make the communication in the working group and during the activities with children as easy as possible, the volunteers are asked to have good level of Spanish (almost fluent) - it will be the only language spoken by the participants. It’s important for vegetarians to be able to adapt to the food served at home, as some may contain at least some meat.
Fee contribution : To support the project a contribution of $ 180 USD is requested to all volunteers, the contribution is to be paid on arrival.

Project: Nuestra Tierra has a permanent program for environmental education. NT has different strategies to involve the local community in the program, and to show them some alternatives actions to protect the environment. One strategy is the recycled paper project. It can be an alternative activity for local people on economy. At first volunteers go to learn about the way of production and about the forest problematic. After that they go to teach to schools and local communities. The volunteers will participate in the process of recycling paper, will prepare the paper and make some material of it. Then the material will be sold on the local level and support the sustainable project and the youth involved.
Accommodation: The volunteers will be lodged in a youth’s hostel (or a home adapted for that), nearby Puerto Vallarta, where will share room with other volunteers, they will take meals there, therefore must cook besides of being included in a schedule to clean the place.
Observations: To make more effective, we required that the volunteer would be fluent in Spanish.
Fee Contribution: To support to the

Project:
Nuestra Tierra proposed to
accomplish a Environmental Fair to show to the people the importance
of environment protection. June 05th is Environment International
Day, thus Nuestra Tierra will organize a lot of activities around this
theme. There will be a different activities locations to involve of the
community. The volunteers are entrusted to help to the local volunteers
for make the different activities, for example: design and mount an exposition,
didactics and interactive games, to show the different stands
to the visitors and groups from the local schools. The volunteers
will have two weeks to involved themselves in the preparation of the fair.
Accommodation : The volunteers will be lodged with local families of Puerto Vallarta or in a home adapted for them, where will share room with other volunteers, they will take meals there, therefore must cook besides of being included in a schedule to clean the place.
Observations: We require that the volunteer has some knowledge of the Spanish language.
Fee Contribution: To support

Project: The work of the volunteers will be to teach English to local children and youth people in the mornings and in the afternoons work with a local woman group to make handicrafts of Recycled Paper. The courses are related to the System for an Integral Development of the Family (“Sistema para el Desarrollo Integral de la Familia–DIF ”), a much larger project supported by official authorities. For the English Class they will have the support of a guide for teach and learn the English language as well they can improve the program with recreation and education activities. The initiatives of the volunteers can of course be useful.
Accommodations: The volunteers will be hosted in a school adapted for that in Las Palmas, They will share community life with the volunteers of the same project. They will prepare their meals in a kitchen.
Observations : The volunteers are asked to have good level of Spanish (almost fluent). Didactic and recreation material donations are welcome!.

Project: Nuestra Tierra will carry an Environmental Education summer program in 2 places for 70 children from 06 to 10 years old; the goal of this project is to sensitize the participants on the importance of the conservation of the natural resources. During four weeks courses on: vegetal reproduction, recycling, recreational activities will be accomplished, in order to carry out a small festival which will be developed for local people in a suburb located in the nearby mountains of Puerto Vallarta and the local library. The group will camp during two days. The volunteers will participate together with Mexican volunteers in the planning and accomplishment of these activities for the children, as well as lead the activities during the camp. A week of activities has been programmed for the volunteers so that they will know the area and are involved in the activities to be developed.
Lodge: The volunteers will be lodged in a camp installed in a school, in a suburb of Puerto Vallarta, where will share room with other volunteers, they will take meals there, therefore must cook besides of being included in a schedule to clean the place.

Casa Hogar Summer 2002

Project: The children of the Casa
Hogar M?ximo Cornejo have experienced all very strong social crises, which
can go from serious economic problems until the abuse on the part of some
adults and in some instances abandonment. Casa Hogar is a place where they
find refuge that in addition to giving them housing, offers them education,
food and care; Nuestra Tierra through its area of International Voluntary
Service supports this project since 1997 with the objective of promoting
the exchange between the volunteers and the children of Casa Hogar through
recreational and didactic activities, sports, during the children summer
vacations.
Lodge: The volunteers will be lodged
in a house for volunteers of Nuestra Tierra or in Casa Hogar, where will
share room with other foreign volunteers.
Observations: We required that the volunteer is fluent in Spanish, as well as English knowledge so that could teach. Donations of didactic material are accepted for the lessons.
Fee contribution: To support to the
project and Nuestra Tierra a contribution of $225 USD is requested to all
volunteers. It must be paid on arrival.
Culture Fair

Project: The Public Library of Puerto Vallarta propose to accomplished this Small Cultural Fairs to show the users of the library cultural and social aspects of others countries, and as well as encourage the reading of authors from those countries. The Public Library is a space open to the public where the local people can approached the international culture. The volunteers are entrusted to design and mount an exposition with graphics, crafts, music and books from authors of their country, to show it to the visitors of the library, these small fairs will be promoted with anticipation by the library among the community of Puerto Vallarta. In addition to the organization of the small fair, the volunteers participate with Mexican volunteers in tasks like classification of books and attention to the visitors.
Lodge: The volunteers will be lodged
in a house for volunteers of Nuestra Tierra or in local families houses.
Observations: We required that the
volunteer would have some knowledge of the Spanish language.
Fee Contribution: To support the project

Project: In Mexico, marine turtles have played an important role in the economic development of some towns of the coast. However, their exploitation has placed them at the present time among species in danger of extinction. The country has got a strategic position for this resource, and is very important to protect them. The volunteers will take part in the nightlong patrols around the beach, as well as in the protecting activities. The protecting work consists of collecting natural nests, taking care of nests in the incubation corrals, taking care of the babies and freeing them to the ocean. This is not an easy work, as it requires night and day activities (even though there will be shifts to avoid a 24h/day presence).
Lodge: A very rustic camp on the beach, having open areas for dining, sleeping (though you might sleep in a tent as well), and bathroom; they are outdoors.
Fee contribution: To support the project

Project: In this project, the volunteers will be in a community Provincia, near Puerto Vallarta. In this project Nuestra Tierra has participate during 2 years during the summer with the children and adults. The volunteers need to implement some recreational activities for kids and English class for adults. The community Provincia is isolate, in the mountains, for that Nuestra Tierra try to develop this kind of activities. There are a Mexican leader as a coordinator, all the volunteer will participate in the decisions to finish and establish the activities in the program.
Lodge: The volunteers will be sleeping in the community school and the meals will be with the local people. The volunteer’s help will be requested in the kitchen.
Observations: The life conditions in Provincia are not very comfortable or luxurious, the volunteer will also have to be prepared for irregular weather conditions.
Remarks: The volunteers are asked to have a fair level of Spanish.
Fee contribution: To support this
project and Nuestra Tierra, the volunteers have to contribute with $200

Project: Nuestra Tierra support some local elementary schools (teachers) to realize supplementary activities with the children during the class period and relation in the national festivities. The volunteers are asked to exchange about their country to the children with some expositions and presentation: music, food, maps, dance, etc. During the national festivity the volunteers support to the teacher for the presentation. The volunteers help also, the scholar work with the teacher.
Lodge: With Mexican families (the families of the children and teachers) will host the volunteers.
Remarks: The volunteers are asked to have a fair level of Spanish.

Centinela Forest

Project: Centinela Forest, Is a natural protected area very beautiful where some people practice hiking & rock climbing, unfortunately there is more and more people getting to live around this area, that cause different kind of bad impact for the environment. The volunteers will take part in the program that consist on the reconstruction and to do activities with the kids from the town. This will be a physic work so a lot of energy and enthusiasm is requested for this work camp, English language will mainly be used but we will do our best to find the way to understand each other basic knowledge of Spanish or at least some interest is welcome.
Lodge: The volunteers will stay together in the building that is going to be restore, these will be basic conditions. (kitchen, living room, dormitories, bathrooms,).

Project: This is to work on the garden of a Farmer for the sustainable development the aim is to show the people of the community a different way to get their food in order to learn how important is to be auto sustainable specially for the economic disadvantage people as an alternative to live. Obviously, work is outdoors and can be quite physical, with use of various hand tools. Nuestra Tierra in coordination with a governmental institution SEMARNAT has set a project to start this farmer so a lot of gardening work need to be done.
Lodge: The volunteers will stay together camping or in Cd. Guzman, with the basic conditions. (kitchen, living room, dormitories, bathrooms,).

Project: Program of Children ca
re Center in the city of Guadalajara. Nuestra Tierra, in coordination with Hermanos Unidos (NGO) has made a program for summer 2002 for volunteers interested in social issues. The work for the volunteers will be to help in a special center for kids coming from disadvantages backgrounds, in the different activities of the house like: giving the meals to the children, specially preparing an artistic workshop for them or other kind of activities, teaching some language (English or your native language) and helping in the house work. Most of the children are between 5-13 years old.
Lodge: The volunteers will stay in a volunteers house with all basics conditions. One of the meals will be served at the children care center with the people who live there. The other will be taken at the sleeping place.
Observations: At least 50% Spanish request, love to work with children.

Chapala lake

Project : Chapala Lake is one of the most important lakes in Mexico. A perfect place to relax, it receives thousands of visitors every year but in the same time the lake has a places to clean and areas to paint and reconstruction. Nuestra Tierra in co-ordination with governmental organism has set up programs to clean the lake, paint and reconstruction some areas around the town of Chapala. The volunteers will take part in the programs that consist in take out the garbage in the lake, to paint and reconstruction some areas. As well, this is not an easy work as it requires your energy.
Lodge: The volunteers will stay together in a house or apartment. these will be basic conditions. (kitchen, living room, dormitories, bathrooms,).

Project: Program of old people home’s is near from the Center of Guadalajara. Nuestra Tierra, in coordination with Club Amigos De La Tercera Edad “ASILO SAN JOSE” has made a program for winter 2002 for volunteers interested in social issues. The work for the volunteers will be to help in a special center for old people and we need the energy of the young people in the different activities of the house like: giving the meals to old people, cleaning them, teach to play any instrumental music and helping in the house work
Lodge: The volunteers will stay in the Nuestra Tierra volunteer’s house
Observations: At least 50% Spanish request.
