Project: There is the biggest ceremony
and festival of Buddhism in Korea. It’s the 2546th birthday of Buddha.
On the closest Sunday to Buddha’s birthday every year, there is a big street
festival to celebrate it in Seoul. Also every temple has a ceremony of
it on the Buddha’s birthday. So, every temple prepares this festival and
ceremony a lot for months.
Participants will join in the activities
of the ceremony preparation in the temple, “Bongeunsa” and “Chogyesa” where
they will stay. And they will also take part in the street festival preparation
in Seoul to help events and enjoy together with the people.
Work & Activities: Participants will work for the ceremony and festival while staying in one of the oldest temples in Korea. Mainly, they will make paper-lanterns and decorate the temple and work to prepare ceremony and festival. They will clean and arrange messes around temple and the festival site after events are finished.
Location: The main accommodation is the Buddhism temple, “Bongwonsa” and “Chogyesa” in Seoul of Korea
Accommodation: In the Temple, “Bongwonsa”
and “Chogyesa”. Volunteers will stay there week by week.
Food: Only vegetarian food, served
in the temple
If participants are vegetarian, it’ll
be very good for them because they can’t take any meat in the temple but
can taste many various Korean vegetables. The food in the temple is always
very delicious and special in Korea.

Project: The aim of this Workcamp
is to renovate the facilities of youth center and help at the local festival
during the Workcamp.
Wando Youth Center is located in
the footstep of mountain. They teach youth how important environment is,
to build the cooperation spirit with their friends at youth outdoor programs
for three days. All facilitations in this youth center are very harmonized
with neighborhood nature.
Wando is very famous for local festival,
JANGBOGO, in May because this festival is related with that Wando was famous
for international harbour thousand years ago in East-South Asia region.
Volunteers will do the preparatory works of the festival and join the festival
activities.
Work & Activities: Volunteers
will stay at Wando Youth Center for whole days during the Workcamp. They
will renovate and repair the houses, equipment, and walls etc. They can
also have some interesting outdoor activities with local youth through
youth programs during day or night such as climbing, campfire as well as
candle ceremony etc.
For other days they will take part
in the preparation of festival such as promotion, building some facilitates
well as cleaning festival site after event finished. They will also join
the activities of festival itself: marching in the street, anniversary
marathon competition and so on. They can have very special experiences
related with Korean cultures during the festival.
Location: Wando island is located
in South Sea of Korea. It’s about 500km away from Seoul. This island is
connected Korea peninsula with a long bridge. This area is a part of two
Ocean National Parks with beautiful and clean ocean
Accommodation: Wando Youth Center
in Wando Island.
Food: Cooked by participants
or with local youth sometimes. Served in cafeteria in youth center in other
case.

Project: This workcamp is hosted by
the local ecological-village in Hongsong that is famous for organic agriculture
in Korea. Inhabitants, all are against any chemical farm produce and the
way of chemical farming so that they had built new village for new movement
not using any chemical but producing healthy and safe food for the people.
Participants help farmers who are
dedicating to restore original condition of environment by an alternative
way without any chemicals in a way of farming. Volunteers can experience
the traditional way of the agricultural society of Korea in the way of
organic agriculture with rice and other farm fields. Volunteers have intercultural
activities and fun with local youth and children for days.
Work & Activities: Volunteers
work in rice field, vegetable field, and green house; mostly outdoors works
such as cutting weed, picking vegetables and fruits, etc. with local farmers.
It could be hard working but you will have fun and good experience with
local people.
They have some intercultural activities
with local youth and children for some days such as going to picnic, exchanging
traditional games, introducing own countries and so on. It will give local
youth and children impressive experience and expand their interest more.
Volunteers learn traditional Korean
musical instruments and performance from local player. It is called “Samulnoi”.
They can visit temple, national park, hot spring or beach nearby during
the weekend. They also are home stayed in local family. It’s good opportunities
to experience Korean typical cultures house.
Location: It’s a small town of Hongsong
in Chungnam Province. It’s about 180km south away from Seoul

as a homestay.

Project: This workcamp is hosted by
“Gandhi School”, one of famous alternative schools in Korea. Some teachers
and parents established ‘alternative school’ called “Gandhi School” as
an alternative to public school system in 1997. It’s named after the Indian
leader, Mohandas Gandhi, who insisted on civil disobedience in the face
of British occupation and political corruption. Gandhi’s spirit is
the based on the teaching at Gandhi School. “Gandhi School” is one of the
most successful models of alternative schools in Korea.
This school is totally different
from normal school in Korea. Its curriculums are focused on outdoor and
practical activities such as sewing, house building, cultivating crops
etc. Most students are 12 to 17 years old and they learn to live together
in the mountain.
The curriculum is decided by the
principles of basic democracy (one person – one vote). Students have the
right to make school rules and decisions on operation in the future of
school. It is an unusual system in Korea.
These students will be the seeds
to change Korea’s society and world in the end after graduation. Volunteers
will take part in meaningful activities.
Work & Activities: Volunteers
will assist and encourage their meaningful movement by joining “Gandhi
Summer School”. This summer school is held every year for elementary school
students. Volunteers will make some activity programs for it with school
teachers and staffs of it before the camp. They will create and organize
interesting and exciting programs for youth and assist youth on each program
such as sports, some games, and creative outdoor activities.
Volunteers will also introduce and
show their own national culture, the way of education methods and share
their thoughts, mind and common concerns with them.
They can visit one of very beautiful
and famous mountain, Jirisan in Korea. They also can visit many historic
places around campsite.

Project: Wando located in far southern
part of Korea is one of the most beautiful islands in Korea. There is a
youth center which is selected the best youth center in Korea by Korean
Government in the year 2000.
Korean youth, who are from 10 to
17 years old, come to the “Wando Youth Center” in order to build the spirit
of teamwork, self-supporting and experience community life with their colleagues
for 2-3days. The volunteers will assist and prepare some programs of youth
there as an assistant during the workcamp as well as repair and decorate
“Wando Youth Center” facilities. The volunteers will have the chance to
learn Korean traditional instruments and playing with youth.
Work & Activities: Primarily,
There are two big jobs to do. Firstly, The volunteers will repair and decorate
some facilities for youth program at the youth center. Secondly, They will
join a part of youth program as assistants. They will help youth ride a
raft of log, work together on orienteering (O.L) and hike the mountains.
They will guide and help youth to enjoy and complete each course.
And volunteers can also introduce
and show their own traditional cultures such as food, customs and music
instruments to Korean youth during workcamp. Youth may hope to get to know
actively and eagerly the cultures of each country. Volunteers will have
the opportunities to look around great and beautiful other islands as well
around Wando.
Location: Korea is a peninsular and has many islands around. Wando Island is in the east-south of this peninsular, almost 500km away from Seoul. This island is connected by bridge to the mainland and the area is famous for clean and beautiful beaches in Korea.

Project: This project is hosted by
Myongin School for blind students in Chunchon that is famous for beautiful
lakes and mountains. This school is established in 1953, more than 97 students
are taught and get the occupation training.
The student wants to get involved
more in society and people. They cannot see anything but they hope to meet
and talk with many people. International volunteers can help them to understand
and experience different cultures and countries even though they can’t
see and visit them now.
Volunteers will provide them with
these opportunities and also plant a courage and self-confidence on them
with the activities.
Volunteers are required to like children
and be motivated quite well to help handicapped children.
Work & Activities:
Volunteers with professional teacher
will organize and operate programs related in social adaptation training
and intercultural learning for primary blind students. For example, introduction
of various cultures and countries, picnic to communities and park, outdoor
exercise, riding horse, English learning, learning of common manners and
have fun together.
They can also visit very beautiful
mountains, lakes and beaches around Kangwon province.

Project: Yangyang has one of the most beautiful national park in Yangyang. It is Sulak National Park. There are many animals and plants appointed by government as precious national products so that lots of people visit here every year to enjoy beautiful nature. Local government makes every effort to provide good service to visitors and also preserve the national park at the same time such as campaigns and activities with protecting the mountain. Volunteers will join in these activities during the workcamp.
Work & Activities: Volunteers
try to find incorrect and wrong information in the map by investigating
actual site of the national park. Reconfirmed map by themselves will guide
visitors to visit only permitted site in the national park and it will
help to protect precious animals and plants there. In addition to this,
Volunteers clean the valley and mountain and build the nature protect campaign
for visitors so that it will encourage visitors to join our movement.
Volunteers can enjoy beautiful beaches
and mountains and also visit guidepost nearby North Korea territory.

Location: Yangyang is located in east coast of Kangwon province. It is about 450km away from Seoul. This area is famous for beautiful landscape and nature.

Project: This workcamp is hosted by
Kangwon National University in Chunchon city. The school established “Bongmyong
forest center” in the mountain and a number of professor and student in
University have been doing various research and experiment in the mountain
of this center for a long time. And they also had paid an attention to
the efficient use of the forest resource.
In the end this area hadn’t been
open to public for many years. So many kinds of animals and plants exist
and the nature of mountain had been well preserved.
Work & Activities: Volunteers
repair or renovate forest facilitates and join some activities related
in using forest resource efficiently. Volunteers join to prepare for cleaning
up the mountain, renovating some facilities and improve footpath. They
also help local communities for other days.

Project: The host organization of this bilateral forest project between Japan and Korea is the Research Forest Center of Kangwon National University in Chunchon city, Kangwon province. This University has been trying to preserve and study Korean nature and environment since established. They are going to open this forest that has been preserved successfully by professors and students to citizen in the future. It is expected that citizens will realize the importance of nature and environment. We will carry out the activities of forest preservation, local service activity and cultural exchange program.

We open a workcamp in Youjiri village,
Jucksung-Myun, Paju city,
Kyeonggi-Do where is 1 hour away
from Seoul.
It has 30 households, 80 residents
who are running Lily green houses.
Work : Volunteers will carry out
various works in the Lily green houses including clearing village. We can
also have time working with intermediate disable people for 2 days.
Extra volunteer working which are teaching language, music and dancing
etc. will to do residents. You can be served some good chances to look
around Seoul which has many temples and traditional spots. Volunteers
will have cultural exchange time though country presentation.
Accommodation : In house. It can
be very basic style so you might want to bring sleeping bag and simple
met for good sleeping.
Age : No age limit, family participation

We open a workcamp in
Kahak village, Kahak-Dong, Gwangmyung city,
Kyeonggi-Do where is 3/4 hour away
from Seoul.
It has 40 households, 100 residents
who are running rise fields.
Work : Working in rice fields and
green houses to learn how to grow rice and the methods of cultivation,
and to raise awareness of development of Korean agricultural systems. Teaching
English to children, hiking with physically or mentally challenged children
and learning traditional Korean musical instruments. You can be served
some good chances to look around Seoul which has many temples and traditional
spots.
Accommodation : Volunteers will stay
in a building provided by the community. There are several amenities such
as fitness center, internet cafe. Bring sleeping bag and simple met for
good sleeping.

CHUNJU CAMP (JANGSU)

We open a workcamp in Yangsam village,
Myungduck-Ri, Janggye-Myun,
Jangsu-Gun, Chulabuk-Do where is
2 and 3/4 hours away from Seoul.
It has 100 households, 300 residents
and is a rather disadvantaged faming village. You can make site seeing
around Chulabuk-Do, hat has famous site seeing places such as Mt. MAI.
Work : Various and interesting work
in the rice fields or green houses. Tidying up and cleaning up the farm.
Accommodation : An authentic Korean
house with shower facility and kitchen.
Bring sleeping bag and simple met
for good sleeping.
Age : No age limit, family participation
is also acceptable.
