The Musaba (Museum of Santa
Barbara) is located two kilometres away from the small village Mammola.
Since 1969, artists, architects, naturalists, archaeologists, and other
contributors have worked together to develop a museum-art school-laboratory
where people of all ages and backgrounds can experience firsthand the life-giving
components of art and nature.
The Project Arte Ambiente is an educational
process. The precise objective of the Foundation's Project is to restore,
construct, safeguard and enhance the ancient complex, only partly realized
and devoted to Museo-Laboratorio, the realization of the “foresteria” and
annex studio-workshop.
The twelve days workcamp will include
in the morning quite a lot of masonry work for the forestry and in the
afternooon restoration of art installations, interventions and maintenance
of the Mediterranean art park and gardens, organic farming.
Volunteers take a hands-on approach
with the construction work and learn to perfect and promulgate proper methods,
primarily that of working stone. The techniques of using natural stone,
pebbles, and other materials for decoration of the art works composes the
primary aspect of the artistic sculptural architectural side of the work.
The project focuses on the acknowledgement
and the development of the practice of ancient techniques and methods.
Outdoors archaeological excavation requires hard work and patience. Be
prepared to get your hands dirty!. The programme involves a lot of physical
labour outdoors. We are pride of our work and expect a high level of commitment
from workcamp participants. The rewards are many: not the least is seeing
the tangible results from our physicals efforts. Participants must also
be able to understand and follow directions given by Nik Spatari and his
assistants. The program requires a full time, five days (plus Saturday
morning) week commitment. The location of the Museum and its surroundings
demand close living to nature in a very simple way far from discos and
other fancy amusements. Flexibility is required in various activities like
the maintenance of the museum/workshop and its structures, art works, services
in bar/restaurant, gardening, cooking, general cleaning. Possibility for
overstaying depending on the availability of places. A motivation letter
is required! You can visit their website: www.musaba.org
LUN 13
Corbara (Salerno - South) 16/06-7/07 10 Vols
ENVI
Corbara is a little town on the hills
not far from Napoli in southern Italy. This camp is organised with “Pubblica
Assistenza Corbara” a local organisation dealing with fire prevention,
the protection of local environment and the relationship between social
issues and ecology. Volunteers will help in a project called “green gymnasium”
that foreseen the construction of facilities to practice outdoor sports.
These will be built in a path that will be open and expressly set up through
cutting grass and little works of carpentry, as well as putting signs indicating
the relevant points of interest in the area. A programme of excursions
and lectures related to local environment issues will be organised.
LUN 14 Cortemilia (Cuneo
– North West) 6-17/07 12 Vols ENVI
Cortemilia is a small village in
the heart of the Langhe (north-east of Italy) – with 2,700 inhabitants.
Its economical background is mainly based on agriculture (hazelnut and
vine growings) and some small industries connected with these cultivations.
Workcamp in co-operation with a group of young people living in different
small villages around the Langhe). They've been co - operating - under
the name of "Cooperativa Sociale Girotondo" - for one year to realise a
project called "Ecomuseo dei Terrazzamenti e della vite" (Terraces and
vineyard eco - museum" of Cortemilia). The Eco - museum is extended all
over a hill; the aim of this camp is to work on a specific part. A stone
dressing school will be set up to mend some typical dry stone walls; volunteers
will learn from a master this ancient and traditional working. The cleaning
of the grounds is also foreseen together with the restoration of an old
path that joins the highest area of the farm; this path will be used by
tourists and students for guided tours.
LUN 15 Cecina (Livorno
- Tuscany) 11-22/07- 12 Vols FEST
The International Antiracist Meeting
held every summer in Cecina (Tuscany, Italy), is organised by ARCI and
promoted by many public authorities. It is one of the most important events
at European level for many associations engaged in the daily fight against
all forms of exclusion and intolerance and in promoting equal relations
between all citizens - whatever their origins may be. It's an event that
involves hundreds of people each year (700 last year): throughout seven
days, discussions will take place in theme-based workshops, in Round Tables
and Conventions, to compare experiences and ideas of those committed to
promote civil rights for all including immigrants and minorities.
The Meeting offers training opportunities
on issues regarding racism, intolerance and social exclusion. Volunteers
will be engaged in setting up the tents before the meeting starts and dismounting
them in the end. They will help in the management of the canteen and local
antiracist association to run their stalls. Possibilities to take part
in the workshops during free time.
LUN 16 Paglieta (Abbruzzo –
Central Italy) 14-28/7 10 Vols FEST
Paglieta is a small town, 40 kms
south from Pescara. The workcamp will support the activities of the eighth
edition of a one week local summer theatre festival focusing on the different
expressions of the Mediterranean cultures. There will be performances in
the street and in different places of the village. Volunteers will support
all the technical necessities of the organisation, including mounting and
dismounting the structures for the performances, hosting the theatre companies
and help them in whatever they may need. There might be the possibility
for those who want to be involved in some theatre actions.
LUN 17 Ferrara (Emilia) 15-28/7
10 Vols ENVI
The camp is held in co-operation
with the local municipality and with an environmental organisation dealing
with the protection of birds named LIPU. During the first week volunteers
will repair the abandoned bicycles that the municipality collected in order
to donate them to local youth organisations. In the second week volunteers
will be involved in the cleaning of a little island (isola bianca) in the
river Po – the longest Italian river – from all the rubbish deposited by
the eventual floods. This area is devoted to the protection of birds, this
is why a special effort to clean it must be made.
LUN 18 Scicli I (Sicily island)
16-30/07 10 Vols ENVI
LUN 19 Scicli II (Sicily island)
06-20/08 10 Vols ENVI
For the fifth year we propose a workcamp
in Scicli, a small town, near Ragusa, in the southern part of Sicily island.
The area of Scicli is quite beautiful and even if it knows problems as
unemployment and criminality, young people try their best to organise themselves
with new ideas for self-employment with the aim to render useful services
to the whole population. A project started last year will continue
in a green oasis very close to the seaside which is now used as a garbage-collection
place. An other aim of the camp is the promotion of a social common culture
among local young people through the intercultural exchange with the foreign
volunteers. They will be asked in specific to talk about their experience
of workcamps in order to promote the idea of voluntary service among young
people.
*Work: Volunteers will clean the
area from the rubbish, marking paths and preparing wooden signs.
LUN 20 Casaprota (Rieti
–Central Italy) 20/7-5/8 10 Vols ENVI
This camp is organised for the second
year in co-operation with the local municipality of Casaprota, a tiny village,
70 kms at north of Roma. This year they decided to have a group of international
volunteers to support them in cleaning of green areas of common interest.
During summer, as a resource attraction for tourists they open the old
cellars of the houses to show the old craftmen jobs, then volunteers will
be also asked to help in the preparation of this event. They expect creative
volunteers willing to interact with the local people.

LUN 22 Riace Superiore
2 (Calabria – Southern Italy) 8-23/8
15 Vols
The camp will be held in a small
town in Southern Italy. This camp is organised together with a local organisation
named “Citt? futura”. They are very active and carry on several projects
for the benefit of the local community. They try to attract tourists through
hosting them in restored old houses giving them the chance to learn more
about traditional handicrafts (such as hand weaving with wooden looms).
Tourists can just learn about this in theory but they can be as well involved
in the activities. They also host 20 Eritrean refugees and some them are
involved in their projects, being this area the place where a lot of refugees
arrive after long and dangerous journeys. Volunteers will perform activities
of path cleaning and will start the construction of structures for a kindergarten.
They are supposed to be willing to interact with the local community.
LUN 23 Campobasso (South) 24/7-7/8
12 Vols FEST
Campobasso is the main town of the
Molise region, approx. 200 Kms south from Roma. For the third year the
municipality and a local youth association organised the “Giochi senza
quartiere” an event that will take place for four weekends. Every saturday
and sunday one of the four districts involved in the event will host the
competition that schedules different games. At the end of the fourth week
the district team with the highest score will win the competition. Of course
this is a way to involve local youth in funny activities within their own
town. The group of volunteers will be involved especially in the preparation
in mounting the structures and in the general organisation of the event
and after to dismount the structures and clear the place. Volunteers are
expected to actively participate to the event. During the week, part of
the time will be devoted to visits and little works of maintenance of green
areas in town.
LUN 24
Livorno (Tuscany) 25/7-10/8
8 Vols STUDY
As in the past years volunteers will
support the activities of a peace festival which will be held in the town
of Livorno that forecast activities such as meetings, concerts and theatre
performances. The theme of this year will be “the forgotten wars all around
the world”. Participants are supposed to be interested in the topic and
they will be asked to play an active role bringing with them the necessary
documentation in order to work out a final document on the issue.
LUN 25 Rovereto (Trento

LUN 26
Buscemi (Siracusa – Sicily island) 30/07-13/08 12 Vols FEST
The workcamp will be held alongside
a festival dealing with pottery handicraft. Actually it is possible to
find in this area a special kind of stone that is still manifactured according
to traditional methods. Decorated ceramics is also another skill that is
very well developed by the local craftsmen. Being one of the major activities
in the area, a yearly festival is held to exhibit and sell the productions
and to show the ancient techniques still in use. In the first week volunteers
will learn about these artisans techniques helping locals during the festival
to show to the public what they have learnt giving to the festival an international
flavour and trying to involve especially local youth who not always show
interest for this kind of activities.
