Project: Close to the Natural Park
of Cilento, Legambiente adopted a streak of beach and pinewood that manages
in collaboration with the municipality and the Forest Guard. This area
is characterised by the typical ecosystem of the sand dunes, by the wonderful
Mediterranean vegetation and by the pine-wood. It is the connection between
the sea and the marvellous archaeological area, rich of testimony of different
populations that colonised the area during the past: the Greeks, the Romans
and the Lucani. Volunteers will collaborate in the management of this area,
renovating and cleaning some parts of it. Participants will also work inside
the archaeological area restoring the old city-walls. For the second year,
the project will be really interesting for the presence of the European
Voluntary Service volunteers who will take part at the fourth project hosted
in Paestum.

Project: Alessano is a village situated
in a region called Salento, in the very South East of Italy. As a testimony
of the importance of the town in the past, archaeological sites, rock villages,
churches and historical building remain. The Municipality of Alessano,
associated in the "Oil Town Project", is running a project of sustainable
development, preparing the institution of a Park. Legambiente is envolved
in this project with the "Olive-trees museum": our idea is to realize
a museum which collects every different kind of Olive-trees coming from
the area; also to collect documentation about the different techniques
to prune the trees, to pick the olives and the different agricultural tools
used in the past. At this first step vols will work in the area we choose
to realize the Museum, they will clean it and substitute of iron
enclosures of the area with typical "dry wall".

Project: The workcamp will take place
in Campsirago a medieval village abandoned in the 50th. The Municipality
of Colle Brianza started a restoration of some buildings, respecting the
historical characters of the area. The village is placed at the slope of
the mountain San Genesio. Volunteers will renovate some old paths and placement
of informative boards. During the workcamp volunteers will visit Lecco
(birth place of the famous writer Manzoni) and the lake of Como.

Project: the aim of the camp is to
restore the valley of Lambro river, rich of karst spring and humid suggestive
areas such as "Busa del Rat", a swamp cared by the local group of Legambiente.

Project: Samolaco is in the Chiavenna
plain, a characteristic alpine valley, crossed by Mera river that flows
down in a gravely river-bed. Vols will collaborate with Legambiente to
reasserting the area in order to fight the terrible so-called "mud-wave",
produced by the maintenance of local dams. Moreover vols will work in the
restoration of Natural Paths along the river.

Project: the camp takes place in
the Regional Park of Serio River, not far from Bergamo, where the river
flow down to the valley and appears like a white expanse of gravel. Along
the river, in the Park, there are several historical ruins and the
most famous is the one of Malpaga Castle. Vols will work in the park of
the castle to realize natural paths, cleaning the area and place informative
boards.

Project: the camp takes place in
the park of Groane, a characteristic plateau covered by woods of pine-trees
and oaks, where vols will be involved in the realisation of a path that
will be useful for future cleaning intervention of a torrent and will be
used also as a trekking path into the park. The area is one of the most
populated of Milano and as a really particular vegetation because of the
acidity of the soil.

Project: Giurdignano, the "megalithic
garden of Europe", is very close to Capo d'Otranto, the most eastern site
of Italy. The little town have important rest of the past as Dolmen and
Menhir and it's possible to find them also in the centre of the town. All
its megalithic monuments are turn to East and there are several hypotheses
concerning the religious traditions of them. Some of these megalithic stones
should be interpreted living the local traditions and suggestive landscape.
Lots of historical monuments can be found everywhere: S.Salvatore 's crypt
in the rock (10th century), Basiliano Abbey (12th century) ecc. Vols will
be involved in cleaning and restoration of the Abbey and in rebuilding
of typical "dry wall" as fence. The activities will be co-ordinated
by expert of Lecce University and Ministry of Culture. During the camp
there will be several traditional folk festivals which happen all along
summertime.

Project: We have been organising
international workcamps for already five years, to renovate and bring out
the value of the Natural Reserve Valle of Aniene, located in Rome. Mostly
thanks to the involvement of many international volunteers the area has
been restored, stopping also the fast urban development that usually destroys
all the urban natural areas. This year volunteers will be involved
in many different activities like: the renovation of excursion routes,
the creation and the placement of wooden informative boards, the collaboration
in the census and study of the avifauna of the area. They will also collaborate
in the production of biological vegetables, that will be used also to cook
their meals. Workcamps will be the focal point for cultural activities
like theatre, open-air cinema, and performances. All this events will be
a way to attract people from the close quarters that will have the chance
to start an intercultural exchange with the volunteers.

Project: the camp takes place in
the small village of Serino, situated at about 30 minutes form Genoa. The
workcamp will be included in a big project of safeguard and valorisation
of the area "Via Orientale dei Forti" (East way of the Fortress) a system
of fortifications that surrounds all the city of Genova. The aim of the
project is the renovation of old paths and the area close to an Enviromental
Education Lab. During their spare time volunteers will visit Genova, known
for the biggest historical centre of Europe, and other small fishers-villages
of the region Liguria.

After many and positive experiences
in the Natural Sea Reserve of Ustica, Legambiente organises again an international
workcamp in the little island of Ustica, located near the coast of Sicily,
60Km North of Palermo. Ustica is characterised and known for the wonderful
sea depths rich of life and vegetation, for the marvellous sea caves and
for its volcanic origins. But also the top part of the island is rich of
interesting fauna. Volunteers will be involved in the renovation of old
paths where they will also place wooden informative boards, created by
themselves. Participants will also collaborate with the guides of the Natural
Reserve.

Project: Biennio is a wonderful medieval
village in Valcamonica that still presents original architecture and traditional
activities like the use of water-mill and water-hammer for iron. The village
is situated into the Regional Park of Adamello, extended from 390 to 3500m
on the sea level, that presents many different natural landscapes. Vols
will be involved in the maintenance of canalisation system of meteoric
water and restoration of paths.

and houses on the banks of the river. For this reasons the local Municipalities,
in collaboration with Legambiente, is involved in the creation of a protect
area to safeguard the environmental richness of the area. Volunteers will
be active in the maintenance of old paths and the placement of wooden informative

Project: after the good experience
of last three years Legambiente decided to host again a new group of international
volunteers. The small city of Eboli is located a few kilometres from Paestum
and the National Park Cilento e Vallo di Diano; close to interesting and
very attractive tourist sites as Pompei and the Costiera Amalfitana. Volunteers
will renovate the ancient paths close to the village. This new net of excursion
routes will be used to develop scientific and environmental activities
aiming at defending and protecting local environmental richness.

Project: Otranto, the most eastern
site in Italy, is one of the most interesting place in the region for its
artistic and historical testimonies. Near Otranto there is a marvellous
"Masseria", old villa used as farm in the ancient time. It was built the
14th century and rebuilt in 19th century with a complex hydraulic system,
located in the middle of a Roman inhabited. Nearby there are an old Tower,
a Church and a Monastery (15th century) of greek-roman priests. Vols will
work in cleaning the old path and in rebuild the typical "dry-wall"; they
will restore the old paving of two Roman halls in local stone. They will
also prepare a path around the church and will participate to a stage about
traditional ways of fishing.

in the small village of Cuirone di Vergiate, located inside the Natural
Reserve of Monte S. Giacomo, a very interesting area for its natural and
historical characters, i.d. the ruins of an ancient Nemeton (a sacred place
for the Celtics). Recently Legambiente started a strong co-operation with
the local municipality and it is envolved in the management of the Natural
Reserve. The workcamp will be the first step to start activities of co-operation.

Project: Cutrofiano is a small village
placed in a equidistant position between the Adriatic and the Ionic coast,
30Km from the two seas. The area is characterised by centuries-old trees,
and by the traditional production of handcraft made in terracotta and with
the typical stone of this area called "pietra leccese" (stones of Lecce").
This year volunteers will be active in the renovation of the Via
Romana (Roman route), located inside an archaeological area rich of rocky
graves, ancient farms and an underground oil-mill dated XVII°sec. already
renovated with the past workcamps. The program will include the creation
of little stone walls to define the route and the placement of informative
boards inside the archaeological site. Volunteers will work during
the first hours of the morning (5 am to 11am), to avoid the high temperature
of the summer.

Project: Montebruno is a small and
pleasant village in the high Trebbia Valley, wild and beautiful valley
crossed by Trebbia river. The village was propose as International Capital
of Rural Culture and has a wonderful Midieval bridge and a Museum of Natural
and Farm-workers culture. Vols will work in restoring path and placing
wooden informative boards with affixed poems: the project, called " Discover
and poetry of path", connect trekking to knowledge of place by literary
production. Vols will have also the opportunity to take part in the commemoration
of the anniversary of the first flight of a woman who left right from here.

Project: Capitignano is a mountain
village situated in the Natural Park of Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga
in the wonderful landscape characterised by two mountains: Grande Corno
and Piccolo Corno (Big and Small Horns), the highest of all Apennines Mountains.
The main traditional activity of the village is connected to the mountain
and volunteers will work in restoration of paths and preparation of pic-nic
areas. It will be possible to organise excursion and trekking on the mountains.

Project: The camp will take place
in the wonderful scenario of the Natural Park of Gran Sasso, characterised

Project: underneath the modern town
of Pontecagnano there are several ruins of the old village, going
from the iron-age, Etruscan and Roman period. Many finds are collected
in the National Museum of Agro Picentino and actually others yards are
going to be opened in the town centre. Legambiente is running since a couple
of years a project of animation of the summer into the Eco-Archaeological
Park of Pontecagnano, organising musical and theatre events, child games
and excursion. Vols will be involved in the maintenance of green area,
the collection of fruit and the preparation of pic-nic areas.

Project: for the third year in the
town of Savona an international workcamp takes place, volunteers will be
involved in the renovation of an old vivarium that will be restored and
used as Environmental Education Centre. The program will include the creation
of a visit routes for children and the renovation of some parts of the
ancient building. All the activities will be organised and coordinated
by technicians of the local Municipality. As we first mentioned the camp
will take place in the town of Savona that counts around 100.000 habitants
and that is placed on the East coast of Liguria, about 70Km far away from
Genoa and 120Km from the border with France.

Project: Donnalucata is a small fisherman
village placed inside the municipality of Scicli. Volunteers will be involved
in many different activities like: safeguard of a dunes system, cleaning

Vols will work mostly in the area between Punta Corvo and Costa di Carro
where cliffs and beaches alternate typical dry walls. The program will
also include excursions to discover the area known for the wonderful baroque
monuments of Scicli, Modica and Ragusa Ibla (historical centre of Ragusa).

Project: the workcamp takes place
in the small village of Giffoni located only 15Kms from Salerno and 25Kms
from Paestum. The program will be divided in three different activities:
the first days volunteers will be involved in environmental renovations
of green areas of the village; in the second part of the program volunteers
will be involved in the organisation of the famous Giffoni Film Festival,
that has also a special section for youth. They will also be envolved in
all the other events organised during the festival. The last part of the
project consists in helping to remove all the building and materials used
to set up the festival.

Project: Grottaglie, situated on
the Murgia of Taranto (a particular kind of hills near the Apennines),
known as "city of ceramic", is completely built in caves and lies in a
Gravina, a characteristic valley between the hills which remind somehow
to small canyons. In this suggestive landscape with olives and pine-trees
there is an ancient Monastery (15th century) which Legambiente aims to
manage. Unfortunately the area is rich of tufa and lots of quarries were
dug in the past to extract stones for building. Some of them were filled
up in the last year and the area is actually used as a natural theatre
in which takes place the famous musical Festival "Musica Mundi". The activity
will consist in filling up the rest of quarries and the maintenance of
the pine-wood.

Project: The camp will take place
in a very small village placed in the heart of the Natural Reserve Zompo
lo Scioppo. The old part of the village has been destroyed during the earthquake
of the 1915. In any case is still possible to see the ancient church dated
at the 1090 (Middle age) and the ruins of several houses. During their
stay volunteers will be mostly involved in a project of environmental education
for children that will take place in the natural reserve. The group will
include Italian children and also Byelorussian kids hosted in Italy thanks
to Legambiente program called "Progetto Chernobyl" that helps the children
in danger because of the radiations, to stay a few months in our country.

Project: the camp will take place
inside the Natural Reserve of Monte Soratte, located only 40Km from Roma.
The Natural Reserve takes the name of the mountain Soratte placed in the
middle of the plain of Tevere. The environment of the area is characterised
by karst phenomena, for example the mountain Soratte is rich of caves and
formation of limestone.
In this environment rich of
fauna, flora and special geological characters, volunteers will be active
in renovating old paths and the realisation of wooden informative boards.

Project: Torre Annunziata is a small
town placed few kilometres from Naples, and very close to the Vesuvio Volcano.
This locality in the past has been a summer holliday area for the Romans,
for this reason it's still possible to admire many archaeological sites
and ancient Roman Villas. Volunteers will be envolved in archaeological,
naturalistic and enviromental activites. Volunteers will work on cleaning
beaches and coast and the last green area in the town. Excursions to Naples,
Pompei archaeological area, Island of Capri are possible in the spare time

Project: Montorfano lake is fed by
sorgive water in a Natural Reserve rich of cane-field, alder wood, chestnut
wood. An interesting spot is a big stone containers where in the past ice
from the lake was collected during the winter, and used during all the
year. Vols will be involved in maintenance of the paths in the Reserve
and cleaning some pic-nic areas.

Project: Bottanuco is a small village
placed close to the river Adda, and the Natural Park that takes the name
of the river. This green area is rich not only of natural elements, but
also of artistic monuments. In this area rich of lakes and rivers, volunteers
will be involved in the renovation of a net of old paths used in the past
to put in connection many villages placed on the left bank of the river
Adda.

Project: the workcamp takes place
in a area close to the river Brembo considered as a natural border between
the districts of Milano and Bergamo. This fluvial area is in serious danger
for the pollution and also for the fast construction of new buildings and
houses on the banks of the river. For this reasons the local Municipalities,
in collaboration with Legambiente, is involved in the creation of a protect
area to safeguard the environmental richness of the area. Volunteers will
be active in the maintenance of old paths and the placement of wooden informative
boards. The project will also include the census of the typical vegetation
of the area.

Project: the workcamp takes place
in the small village of Filago situated on the right bank of the river
Brembo and it is surrounded by many other small rivers that characterise
all the plain of Lombardia. Volunteers will be active in the creation and
renovation of excursion paths that will pass through the woods and close
to the rivers. During the camp participants will also realise informative
boards that will be placed along the routes. During the spare time volunteers
will have the chance to visit Bergamo and to discover the marvellous nature
of the Regional Park Adda North.

Project: the small city of Somma
Vesuviana is placed in the National Park of Vesuvio and is very known for
the many popular and traditional festivals. The most ancient one is called
"Festa delle lucerne" (Festival of the oil-lamps), organised every four
years in the month of August and takes place in the historical centre of
the town. For this celebration it is a tradition to put oil-lamps all over
the small alleys of the city, this kind of decoration creates a marvellous
atmosphere. This popular festival has roman origins, in fact in all the
classic cultures the oil-lamps where considered as a symbol of fertility.
The festival is dedicated to Diana, considered as a light of the wayfarers,
and during the Christianity linked to the Madonna della Neve. The most
important moment of all the festival is when women sing traditional songs
to celebrate Madonna della Neve; these songs have been handed down from
a generation to the other one since many, many centuries. Volunteers will
be an active part for the creation of this wonderful atmosphere, collaborating
to the preparation of the festival. Participants will also be active in
the renovation of an ancient building managed by Legambiente, and they
will be involved in fire-watching.

Project: Pettorano sul Gizio is a
medieval village rich of little squares, small streets and wonderful views
on the mountains. The village is placed inside the Natural Reserve of Monte
Genzana near to the National Park of Abruzzo one of the most known in Italy.
Near the river Gizio it has been recently discovered an archaeological
site, called Santa Margherita, which presents ruins, walls and monuments.
Volunteers will be involved in the restoration of ancient walls, beside,
in collaboration with the local authorities, they will make excavations
and delimitate the site.

Project: the workcamp will take place
on the northern slope of the volcano Etna near the valley of Alcantara
and Simeto rivers, natural route from the oriental coast to the hinterland.
These areas are include into three Natural Parks : Etna, Alcantara and
Nebrodi Park. The goal of the camp will be the definition of the archaeological
pre-historical and roman-byzantine sites, mostly unknown and not protected.
The activity of vols will consist in inspections of the area and the preparation
of a map of archaeological surveys. In collaboration with experts of the
Archaeological Service, vols will realise explorative excavations,
historical and environmental studies of the area and informative boards.

Project: the camp will take place
in the small village of Tricase Porto located on the Adriatic coast that
characterize all the area called Salento. The area is also very interesting
for the tipical mediterrean vegetation, in this small municipatility it
is possible to admire a special monument: a oak-tree dated at the XXII
century. Volunteers will be involved in a project aimed to re-qualifie
the historical center of Tricase located at a few Kms from Tricase Porto;
they will also collaborate with local artists, antiquarians and craftsmans
in the organisation of a small "Solidal Market". During the camp it will
be possible to take part to a course on the hancrafts realization of
wicker baskets.

Project: Vico Equense is located
near Naplesi, Pompei, Positano and Sorrento, in a suggestive area, rich
of natural and archaeological beauties. Vols will live and work in the
Environmental Educational Centre called "Il Melograno", placed on the Lattari
Mounts, that are going to become a natural park. The work will consist
in the maintenance and cleaning of some paths just around the centre, connected
with the highest mountain of the zone: Faito Mountain. In the area there
is still a spring where there are the "pinguicula hirtiflora", the unique
carnivore plant of Apennines.

Project: Valverde is in the soft
hills of Appennini Mountains, 80km North of Milan. Rich of wood and valleys,
crossed through by Morcione river, is a tourist site during the summer
and an agricultural area for the rest of the year. Valverde Castle is in
the middle of the Municipal Park in which vols will be involved in the
cleaning and maintenance of paths. During the summer in Valverde lots of
cultural and artistic events take place and vols will help the Municipality
in organising some of those.

Project: Ottaviano is a small town

of Vesuvio. Ottaviano is dated at the '700, and still now it is possible

the area. Volunteers will be involved in a project that has the finality
to safeguard a lava-flow, interesting for the geological characters. Participants
will also renovate old paths and safeguard the area from the danger of
fires. They will also take a census of vines and restore an old structure
used to conserve the natural products.

Project: the Regional Park of Campo
dei Fiori, where Brinzio lies, is composed by two marvellous mountains:
Martica (m.1032) and Campo dei Fiori (m. 1226). On the top of it, called
Punta Paradiso, there is the City of Natural Science and the astronomic
and seismologic observatory, meteorological station and Botanical Garden.
The activity for the camp will be in connection with two LIFE Projects
in the Park and it will consists in cutting grass and maintenance of old

Project: For the fifth year there
will be an international workcamps in the small village of Castel San Lorenzo,
located in the National Park of Cilento e Vallo di Diano. Close to this
area there are interesting localities like Paestum, known for the archaelogical
ruins, the caves of Castelcivita, the ancient church of Padula etc... Volunteers
will work in a very particular scenery really interesting for the natural
characters and the richness of views. In this area still lives the otter.
The working program includes the maintenance of old paths placed close
to the banks of the river Calore, where volunteers will also place informative

Project: Castellana Sicula is one
of the 15 municipalities included inside the area of Natural Park of Madonie.
The area is characterised by woods with typical Mediterranean vegetation,
springs and interesting historical churches like the Sanctuary of Madonna
dell'Alto, the highest located in Sicily. Volunteers will be involved in
the maintenance of the Environmental Educational Centre building and collaboration
with the old farmer in biological agriculture. They will also collaborate
with archaeologists in discovering and cleaning an archaeological area
near the Centre where a 1st century thermal bath was found. Spare time
will be spent to the seaside.

Project: Fiumendisi is a picturesque
village situated on Peloritani Mountains into the Natural Reserve of Scudieri
Mountain (350mt. on sea level). The Reserve is rich of rare plants, geological

Project: Poggio Picenze is a small
village situated between the Natural Park of Gran Sasso and Monti della
Laga and the Natural Park of Sirente Velino. It is possible to admire Gran
Sasso (the highest mountain of the Apennine Mountains) on the West Side,
the mountain Sirente-Velino on the East, a marvellous view on the plain
of Navelli, known for the production of saffron. The centre is not far
from L'Aquila (15kms) and it is rich of traditions and ancient trades as
stone manufacture. The work will consist in renovation of paths near the
village.

the workcamp volunteers will visit Lecco (birth place of the famous writer
Manzoni) and the lake of Como.

Project: the camp takes place in
the Park of Po, placed mostly inside the perimeter of the Municipality
of Cremona. Volunteers will be hosted in Cremona, city that counts 70.000
habitants, known for the Stradivarius and his lute-makers school. The working
program includes the maintenance of the park seriously damaged by a flood
of the river Po in the autumn 2000. Volunteers will be active in removing
all the silts that covered the area after the disaster.

of Marcaria, they will also renovate a few little bridges used to reach

Project: Legambiente, in collaboration
with a local association and with the local administration, is running
a project to restore an old farmhouse where it will be possible to organise
an Environmental Educational Centre. The farmhouse is situated in the area
of Mugello, rich of woods and mountains, animals and different kind of
trees, in a wild atmosphere. Nearby it is possible to visit the ancient
Diacci Mill and the Hermitage of Piani of Rovigo. Vols will work in the
restoration of the farmhouse and of the Hermitage and in the maintenance
of surrounding paths.

to public use, to increase the naturalistic value and to involve the population.

Project: Piancastagnaio is situated
near the Amiata Mountain, a volcanic relief covered by chestnut wood and
pretty villages. Cultivation of chestnut was, for ages, the base of economical
and social life in the area. The goal of the camp is to renovate the ancient
drying-room where chestnuts were dried, to open paths in the wood to arrive
there from the village, to prepare wooden boards to present the traditions
connected to chestnuts. Vols will be hosted in a public building into the
Regional Reserve of Pigelleto where it's possible to admire 25 kinds of
trees and 28 kinds shrubs. Not far from Pincastagnaio, there are many turist
wonderful places as Montepulciano, Montalcino, Pienza, Pitigliano, Saturnia
and it will be possible to visit them during the spare time.

border with France. The Association started to organise workcamps in the
1992 and all the 18 groups that they hosted have been involved in the maintenance
of the old houses, and the abandoned building that now area used again.
This year volunteers will continue the work started by the other groups
in the past renovating structures and rebuilding stone-walls and
collaborating in biological agriculture. The work is very involving and
hard.
