OH-A 4 Ollendorf Water Castle 30/06–13/07
12 PART CONS
Summer workcamp in Ollendorf Water
Castle
Restoration of the roof construction,
the roof and other parts of a baroque manor house in a former Medieval
water castle
Project: Ollendorf castle is situated
between Erfurt, Thuringia?s regional centre, and Weimar, the 1999 European
town of culture.
Ollendorf was once an important settlement
on the historical Via Regia, one of the most significant routes of commerce
in the Middle Ages, and which linked Thuringia and Saxony to Eastern Europe.
At the end of the seventeenth century, after the castle had been destroyed
by a fire, the manor was built in a simple rural baroque style. Following
the decline of the Via Regia in the 19th century, the site was chiefly
used for agricultural purposes and store houses and barns were built. Then
the manor fell into disrepair after having been abandoned for several decades.
In 1997 the water castle was taken
over by Open Houses.
Due to the young people who have
lived there and taken part in its renovation, the castle, near both Weimar
and Erfurt, is a place of creativity and open-mindedness. In a spirit true
to its past as an inn, the castle will once more become a place where people
come and go and where different cultures meet.
According to their training and manual
capacities, the participants will renovate the roof truss and tile the
roofs of the seventeenth century manor and one of the nearby buildings.
They will also do some restoration work on the store houses.

Building weeks
Within the framework of the building weeks, both skilled manual workers and those with no manual training can work together to restore historical monuments.
In contrast to the workcamps where the emphasis lies on communal life in a group of people of different nationalities and from different backgrounds, here it lies on the manual work. Participants here have a greater possibility of gaining real experience in restoration and other manual tasks and to broaden their knowledge.
A further aim is that those taking part should share their skills and experiences. Craftsmen bring the technical element whilst the other participants, who often come from social professions, bring with them the concept of public benefit.
The building weeks each last for two
weeks and the groups are small – depending on the number of applications
received. It is also possible to take part for a shorter time, as we would
like to offer this opportunity to those tied up in professional life and
with little free time.

OH-R 1 Hartenberk (CZ) – Oberau (D)
04/08–24/08 20 PART RENO/BIKE
Workcamp in two countries plus bicycle
tour
Project: The HeritageCycleTour is
a mixture of manual work and foot work. Scheduled is one week workcamp
on a castle in Western Bohemia, one on castle in Saxony (Germany). In between
we will go for a bicycle tour.
Aim of the tour is the discovery
of the heritage scene in the region, seen through the eyes of different
people from different countries, and to learn more about the history of
the region, its styles of architecture and the style of living of its population
in the past. At the same time it is aimed to support the preservation of
the two monuments by practical, manual work.
We start the tour in Western Bohemia:
Hartenberk is a castle ruin near Karlovy Vary, in the middle of a wild
park, situated next to a little stream – almost like in a fairly-tail.
The castles’ turbulent history can be dated back to the 13th century. Its
poor state today is a result of the expulsion of the Sudenten Germans in
the region after World War II and its negligence under the following regime.
The participants will work within
the castle site and its surrounding. Removing of the rubble and stones
within the castle site, arranging of paths in the environment, production
and installation of the wooden benches in the nearby forest.
It follows a week on the road. By
bike – between 40 and 70 kilometres per day – and train the participants
will cross the charming landscapes of the border region between Bohemia
and Saxony, slowly approaching the second castle site, Oberau, near Dresden.
Oberau is one of the oldest fortresses
surrounded by water in Saxony. In the Renaissance it had been transformed
to a castle. The site can be dated back to the medieval times, in the 16th
century is had been enlarged. Despite of complex changings, remarkable
original parts remained from the early periods of the castle, such as the
vaults on ground level and the richly decorated wooden ceilings from Renaissance
and Baroque in the upper floors. The participants of the camp may take
part in various fields of renovation, depending on their knowledge and
interests: Carpenter work, brick layering, and roof construction within
the castle or simple preparatory jobs at the surrounding buildings.
Accommodation: During the camp, the
group will be accommodated in 2-person- tents and simple houses, meals
will be prepared commonly.

of the 1990s and to revive it by cultural activities. Since then, a large
number of art workshops, exhibitions, concerts and international meetings
took place in the castle.
In autumn 2000, Open Houses could
take over the castle in its ownership, which allows extensive construction
works which exceed the preservation of the substance of the historic monument
and require long-term concepts for cultural use so that the original conception
for use has to be revised and extended.
Already in 2001 a summer academy
took place at Lohra Castle. Together with students from twelve countries
we started developing a concept for its use as a site for interaction and
creativity. Based on the results and experiences of the last years’ campus,
this year the focus is much more an architectural.
In two intensive weeks of time, in
parallel-working groups of international participants (3-5 persons), the
goal of the 2002 campus is to develop plans for each building of the site
based on the existing concepts of use. The range of topics will be wide:
Starting with the conversion of an Medieval building into residential building
. Or the reconstruction of a barn from 19th century into a multi-functional
place for practicing and for events. Another subject will be the interior
re-design of a building from the 60s of this century into a seminar building.
And finally we will focus on the castle terrain, where to connect buildings
with paths and how to give access to the castle site.
Finally, our aim will be to find
practical solutions, close to reality, saving financial and natural resources.

PART THEATRE
Via Regia Art Project – Six inch,
59 feet – A theatre workshop –
Theatre Workshop at Lohra Castle
Project: ”I tried to get up, but I
wasn’t able to move; I was laying on my back, and my arms and legs were
fixed to the ground. The same thing had happened to my long hairs. Straight
across my body, from the shoulder height up to the thighs, I felt several
tightly stretched thin cords. (...) In the meantime I felt how something
moved on my left thigh, it moved quietly forward and came about my breast
almost to my chin. I twisted the eyes so far as possible downwards and
recognized a human nature of approximately six inches height with curve
and arrows in the hand and with a quiver on the back."
Well, who doesn’t know them, the
adventures of Gulliver the giant? .
This year’s theatre workshop in Lohra
Castle in Northern Thuringia is meant as an invitation to go once more
on the journey and to be rinsed to the unknown coast of Lilliput. Once
more decisions should be taken, once more we will face the dwarfs.
The exciting of this material appears
to us the question after the power and the faint of a giant. How big is
Gulliver? What is a size? What a giant must do what he can prevent? Can
he change the world, he can find a place?
And by the way - how one represents
on the stage this size difference plausibly?
Invited are people who are interested
in theatre who enjoy the active play, enjoy movement and who enjoy a mutual
exploratory expedition in a multicultural mixed group.

Via Regia Art Project – The Rhythm
of Cultures
Project: Music and dance prove that
cultures which widely differ retain a common root. We would like an open-minded
lively mixed group of people to search together for our common musical
roots and, respecting regional cultures, to share with each other our songs
and dances.
Like last year, the workshop will
be conducted by Nago Koite, an experienced drum and dance teacher from
Senegal, together with other African musicians.
For one week, Ollendorf water castle
will once more become a "caravan seraglio" where some dozens people - children,
younger and older people - from many different countries will live together
in the castle, in basic conditions, sing, dance, make music and at the
end put on a show in an old store house now used only for cultural purposes.
Anyone interested, with or without
experience, is welcome and whoever plays an instrument should bring it.
Applications stating musical capacities would make the project's organisation
easier.
Work: International world music workshop
(drumming, dancing, singing etc.) for volunteers with and without instrumental
experience with two performances at the end of the project.

on mattresses in the house. One warm shower.
