LOCAL ORGANIZATION : City of Sainte-Th?r?se
Seven years ago, the municipality and groups of Chantiers jeunesse began the transformation of an abandoned site into a new green space right in the centre of town, located some 30 km north of Montreal. The site, known as the “Pit ? Charron” (the Cartwright Pit) is a former quarry and garbage dump! The groups toiled away at cleaning the site and beginning a landscaping job. We are, as a result, a long way from the first two phases when 800 tires were found and the first paths and trails were built! This site is now a nature park well known by the whole community. Participants have helped with the installation of wind turbines used to filter the water of the ponds. One of these ponds has, by the way, been named after Chantiers jeunesse to honour the groups! Welcome to the “Jardin des Sources” (Springs Garden) !

WORK
The municipality has agreed on a development plan that will make the site more accessible to citizens and that will bring to value the natural and ecological features of the site. Here is the challenge for this birds paradise!
? To set up a new pedestrian path;
? to continue the set up of some little bridges and the welcome area in the park;
? to clean undergrowths in the park;
? to fix up the existing footpaths;
? to work on the set up of the River Park (trimming trees, development of the undergrowths, soil preparation);
? to plant trees and shrubs in various areas in the park;
? to take part in the organisation of an “Open house” activity aimed at making the public aware of the importance of such a natural space (Phase 2, in August).
The activities for each phase can overlap, depending on how the workcamps unfold.
ACCOMMODATION : In the student residences of the College of Sainte-Th?r?se.

LOCAL ORGANIZATION : Mount-Vid?o Corporation
In Abitibi, whenever we talk about down-hill skiing, Mount Video cannot be missed! Located between Val D’Or, Amos and Senneterre, this regional organisation has been offering, for over 30 years, outdoors leisure and sports activities to the population of Abitibi-T?miscamingue. For a fourth year, two groups will take part in the development of summer activities. Currently, the Centre is used mostly in winter and the management is looking to diversify their activities by developing  summer activities. Groups of Chantiers jeunesse have started the works needed to make the site accessible all year around. They have even built a splendid viewpoint on the mountain!

WORK
? To set up an alpine skiing trail in undergrowths;
? to set up a new section in the cross-country skiing trail;
? to complete the work on a footpath in the mountain
? to make and fix up the signs in the trails and on the site;
? to maintain some installations in the mountain (for example :the viewpoint built by volunteers!);
? IN JULY ONLY : to take an active part in the organisation of a one-day mountain bike mass event (getting the trails ready for competition, preparing all the logistics of the competition and the evening show!);
The activities for each phase can overlap, depending on how the workcamps unfold.

LOCAL ORGANIZATION : The Friends of the Saint-Fran?ois Lake Fauna National Reserve
Imagine a unique ecosystem, close to the American border, to Akwasasne and the Lake Saint-Fran?ois, in the little known south-west region of Quebec. Marshlands, grass lands, swamps, trails, over 220 birds species and 600 plants species. Add to all that, tortoises, rabaskas and small boats peacefully floating in narrow channels.  Around the corner, ornithologists are watching a great heron, a kingfisher, a woodduck, a red-winged-blackbird… Great environment to work in, isn’t it ? In 1993, local people joined to create the Amis de la R?serve nationale de la faune du lac Saint-Fran?ois (The Friends of the Saint-Fran?ois Lake Fauna National Reserve)
to be able to offer various activities, to preserve this unique place and to make people aware of the richness of the wetlands. An active bunch of people, most of them being volunteers.

WORK
Your part in all this ? To make bird watching possible without disturbing the birds ! The July and August groups will build footbridges allowing better bird watching. This way, you will get to know one of the four sites in Quebec that are protected marshlands officially recognised by UNESCO.
? To build a 250 meters long footbridges that will allow better bird watching in the egrets dam area;
? to build a 400 meters sidewalk that will allow better watching of rare plants;
? to repair a dike that was damaged by muskrats;
? to maintain trails ( clearing undergrowth, restoration, etc.);
The activities for each phase can overlap, depending on how the workcamps unfold.

LOCATION : Dundee is located 10 km of the American border, and 80 km south of Montreal.
